This tornado first touched down briefly about 2 miles northwest of Stonebluff along U.S. Highway 64 and tore up bits of the asphalt highway. It moved northeastward across the Arkansas River where 3 anglers escaped injury by hanging onto trees as the funnel passed over them. The tornado touched down intermittently along its path through rural areas. The greatest damage occurred along a 3.5-mile stretch of the damage path just before the tornado dissipating 1.5 miles northwest of Coweta. Four homes, 2 barns, and several outbuildings were demolished. One woman was injured when a toppled tree crushed the storm cellar door where she was sheltering. A family of 11 took shelter under and between beds as their home was leveled by the tornado. Fortunately, only one child received minor injuries. One of two women taking cover under a bridge was injured while their abandoned car had all of its windows broken out by the tornado. Three children were hurt when two cars went into ditches as the drivers fled from the storm. |
