Powerful Pacific Storm to Continue Impacting Northern California; Heavy Snow in the Appalachians and Portions of the Northeast

A strong atmospheric river will continue to impact northern California with heavy rain and life-threatening flooding through Friday. A tornado moving north-northeastward across parts of Pawnee and Osage counties destroyed 1 home, badly damaged 3 other homes, destroyed or damaged many outbuildings, and killed some livestock in the Skedee area. Damage to outbuildings extended into the Fairfax district in Osage County. One person was injured in Pawnee County.

This tornado touched down in Wynona in Osage County and moved northeastward through Pershing before striking the Bartlesville and Dewey areas in Washington County and then dissipating near South Coffeyville in Nowata County. Houses and business buildings were heavily damaged in Wynona and Pershing, and two children were injured by flying glass in Wynona.

In Washington County, both the Bartlesville and Dewey airports were heavily damaged while roofs, outbuildings, utility poles, trees, etc. were damaged extensively along the tornado's path. The last evidence of the damage path was near South Coffeyville where farmstead was damaged. Hail up to 1.5 inches fell along the path of the storm as it moved northeastward. No condensation funnel was spotted, but one witness described the storm as a low hanging square with three tails.

  06/08/1974 1555 29 400 F4 14 150 Payne/ Creek/ Tulsa/ Osage 3 SW Drumright - Drumright - Olive - Lake Keystone - 7 WSW Sperry - W of Skiatook

This tornado touched down 3 miles southwest of Drumright, OK in Payne County and struck the Oak Grove Community at about 3:55 pm CST, heavily damaging the school.  The tornado moved east-northeast into Drumright a few minutes later, causing extensive damage through the northwestern portion of the community. Six people were killed in a nursing home and another 6 persons died at various locations in the city.

It continued moving northeast and struck the community of Olive, OK, destroying parts of the school along with 2 mobile homes and several frame homes. One person was killed in Olive. The tornado then continued on a northeasterly course and damaged Pier 51 on Lake Keystone. It destroyed several mobile homes about 7 miles west-southwest of Sperry, OK and one person was killed in this area. The tornado then turned a more north-northeasterly track and produced damage to several brick homes west of Skiatook, OK before it dissipated.

The tornado killed a total of 14 people, including 12 in Drumright, one in the town of Olive, and one near Sperry. Approximately 150 people were injured along the path of the storm.

A tornado touched down for 3-5 minutes on a ranch about 6 miles northwest of Dewey. The tornado moved to the southeast, destroyed several farm buildings and silos, and killed a number of livestock. It also unroofed one home. One man received minor injuries to his hands from flying glass.

A small tornado briefly touched down near Pawhuska and damaged a business, a mobile home, trees, windows, and roofs. One woman was injured by flying glass.

  04/26/1984 2255 5 880 F1 0 5 Osage/ Tulsa 3 SW- just E of Skiatook

A tornado touched down 3 miles southwest of Skiatook, moved northeast, and dissipated just east of the town. Two houses were destroyed while 2 houses received major damage, and another 9 homes had minor damage. A total of 9 mobile homes were also destroyed. Damage estimates were $150,000 and 5 people were injured.

This tornado touched down 2.8 miles north and 6.3 miles east of Shamrock, OK in Creek County and moved northward along a 26-mile path through Pawnee and Osage counties. The tornado struck the Olive, OK area, then moved through Mannford, OK and New Prue, OK before dissipating just northeast of New Prue. The storm did considerable damage in Mannford and New Prue. One person was killed and 60 people were injured. Damage estimates for the storm were near $10 million.

The "Red Rock" tornado was the third in a series of 9 tornadoes that occurred in Oklahoma during the April 26, 1991 tornado outbreak. The tornado touched down 2.5 miles east of Garber at approximately 5:30 pm CST and moved northeast. The tornado increased to F3 intensity as it passed 4.5 miles south of Billings. Oil tanks were destroyed, well pumps toppled, and power poles snapped. The path width at this point was estimated at 0.5 miles. The tornado grew to a width of 0.75 miles and destroyed a home 5 miles southeast of Billings.

The tornado strengthened to F4 intensity as it neared Interstate 35, debarking many trees and destroying a home. The tornado continued east-northeast across Noble County, passing south of Marland and north of the Otoe Indian Agency, destroying at least two farms along the way. The tornado continued on into Osage County, where its intensity dropped to F3, and moved just to the north of Fairfax where many trees were uprooted and a house was damaged. Ten miles west of Pawhuska a large oil rig with an 18-inch foundation was toppled.

The tornado lifted at 6:55 pm CST 9 miles west-northwest of Pawhuska, with a total path length of 66 miles. Damage was estimated at $500 000. Damage incurred at one totally-destroyed farm alone was estimated at $200,000. Several county roads were destroyed when large sections of asphalt were blown away. There were six injuries in this tornado, but none were serious.

  04/26/1991 1910 32 1700 F4 1 24 Pawnee/ Osage 1.5 WSW Terlton - Westport - 1 NNW Skiatook

The "Westport" tornado was the sixth in a series of 9 tornadoes that occurred in Oklahoma during the April 26, 1991 tornado outbreak. This tornado went along a 32-mile path from 1.5 miles west-southwest of Terlton, OK to 1 mile north-northwest of Skiatook, OK. It began at 7:10 pm CST and ended at 8:27 pm CST. The tornado narrowly missed the town of Terlton as it moved east-northeast. Northeast of Terlton and west of OK State Highway 48, the tornado was weak (F0 damage to trees.) The tornado strengthened as it crossed OK State Highway 48, 0.5 miles south of the Cimarron Turnpike, and produced F1 and F2 intensity damage to structures and power poles. Up to that point it had been one-eighth mile in width.

After crossing OK State Highway 48, the tornado widened rapidly to about 1 mile and intensity increased to F4 strength as it crossed the turnpike. Several cars were swept off the turnpike with five injuries and one fatality. A man was killed when his car was overturned.

The tornado then crossed into the Keystone Airpark at 7:30 pm CST and caused significant damage to four hangers, and seven aircraft were destroyed. Two of the planes were tossed into trees. The fire station at the airport was demolished, with one of the fire engines pushed across the runway and flung into an area of trees about 0.25 miles away.

The Ridgemont Estates Subdivision 1 mile east of Westport, OK was hard hit, with F4 damage occurring to homes and trees. In the Westport area, 54 homes were completely demolished, 8 homes suffered substantial damage, and 32 homes suffered minor damage. Also destroyed were 70 vehicles, 5 mobile homes, 18 outbuildings, and 3 travel trailers. The community center at Westport suffered damage. There were no fatalities and no reported injuries at Westport. The tornado was 400-yards wide in the Westport area.

The tornado crossed Keystone Lake into Osage County at 7:44 pm CST, and briefly lifted in the vicinity of New Prue, OK. The tornado then touched down again east-northeast of New Prue, 0.5 miles southwest of the John Zink Scout Ranch and destroyed the lodge there, where a group of Girl Scouts had taken cover. There were no reported injuries among the scouts. All trees along the path of the tornado were snapped off or uprooted, as it continued to the northeast, to the extreme south edge of Skiatook Lake, where some boat docks and a marina were damaged. The tornado continued to 1.5 miles west of Skiatook, OK on OK State Highway 20 where there was damage to a propane company at 8:15 pm CST.

The tornado moved on to a subdivision 1 mile west-northwest of Skiatook, where 32 homes were destroyed, 11 homes suffered major damage, and 45 homes suffered minor damage. There were 19 injuries in the Skiatook area. The damage was rated at F3 intensity. The tornado continued northeast for a short time and lifted at 8:27 pm CST, shortly before crossing the Tulsa County line. Damage was estimated from this storm at close to $3 million.

Severe thunderstorms developed in portions of north-central Oklahoma during the afternoon and early evening hours of May 6th and moved south through portions of central and into southeast Oklahoma. These storms produced weak, brief tornadoes, hail up to softball size and damaging winds. A tornado touched down briefly 11 miles east of Ponca City in Osage County and produced light damage and injured one person.

  04/19/2003 1657-1730 20 440 F2 0 3 Osage/ Washington/ Nowata 6.5 NE Okesa - 7 WSW South Coffeyville

A tornado touched down 8 miles west southwest of Dewey or 6.5 miles northeast of Okesa and traveled 5 miles east-northeast before entering Washington County 5 miles northwest of Dewey or 7.2 miles southeast of Bowring. The tornado produced a 200-yard-wide damage swath along its path. The damage was to trees and power lines.

The tornado entered Washington County 5 miles northwest of Dewey and passed between Dewey and Copan before entering Nowata County 1 mile north of Wann or 6.8 miles east northeast of Copan. The tornado produced F2 damage and a half-mile-wide damage path at its peak. A total of 41 homes, 2 businesses and 40 barns and sheds were damaged. Sixteen of the homes were severely damaged including two mobile homes which were completely destroyed. Three people were treated at an emergency room of a hospital in Bartlesville due to injuries received during the tornado. Two of those people were inhabitants of one of the mobile homes that was destroyed.

The tornado entered Nowata County from Washington County one mile north of Wann. The tornado traveled east-northeast for 3 miles producing damage to barns, sheds, and power poles and power lines before lifting 7 miles west-southwest of South Coffeyville. The electrical service was interrupted for up to 8 hours in the northwest part of Nowata County and adjacent parts of Washington County.

Severe thunderstorms with large hail and damaging winds affected northeast Oklahoma from the late afternoon hours of November 5th to the early morning hours of November 6th. A tornado destroyed a mobile home, damaged another mobile home, damaged the roof of a house, blew the roof off of a storage building, and damaged a number of trees. Maximum estimated wind based on the damage observed during a storm survey was between 75 and 85 mph. Two people in the mobile home that was destroyed were injured.

The tornado developed over Keystone Lake, west of Appalachia Bay Recreation Area. The beginning of this tornado was filmed by storm chasers. The tornado moved east-southeast across the lake waters and adjacent uninhabited land areas. Damage is strongly suspected to trees in this segment of the tornado but those suspected areas were not accessible by road.

The tornado crossed into Osage County over Keystone Lake and quickly crossed U.S. Highway 412. It then moved through a wooded area that was inaccessible by road. The first damage that was accessible by the survey team was at S 209th W Avenue, where the tornado damaged a church, snapped large tree limbs, and damaged a home. It moved east- southeast toward W Archer Road snapping or uprooting trees and damaging homes.

The tornado moved into Tulsa County at W Archer Road to the east of S 209th W Avenue. The roofs of several homes were damaged and trees were uprooted as it crossed S 193rd W Avenue. The tornado moved southeast crossing U.S. Highway 412, where it snapped or uprooted numerous trees and blew a tractor trailer off the road . A doughnut shop was destroyed at S 177th W Avenue, homes were damaged, and trees and poles were snapped.

The tornado crossed the Arkansas River and moved through the River Oaks Estates Mobile Home Park where it destroyed 58 mobile homes and two permanent homes. One fatality and about 30 injuries occurred in this park. The tornado crossed the Arkansas River again as it moved east-southeast toward Sand Springs, uprooting numerous trees before dissipating on the south side of Sand Springs, south of U.S. Highway 412 and just west of OK State Highway 97. Based on this damage, maximum estimated wind in the tornado was 125 to 135 mph.

Thunderstorms developed over eastern Oklahoma during the morning hours of March 30th as a warm front moved into the region from the south. The stronger storms produced large hail. Additional thunderstorm development occurred along and ahead of a dry line over central Oklahoma during the afternoon. These storms moved eastward into northeastern Oklahoma during the late afternoon and evening. Four tornadoes, two of which were strong, hail up to golfball size, and damaging wind occurred with these storms.

In Osage County, this tornado severely damaged the roof of a home, destroyed several outbuildings, destroyed farm equipment, and snapped or uprooted numerous trees. Based on this damage, maximum estimated wind in this segment of the tornado was 100 to 110 mph. The tornado continued into Tulsa County, Oklahoma.

In Tulsa County, the tornado moved east-northeast, roughly along E 46th Street N to the west of Highway 75. It damaged more than 300 homes, and thirteen churches and businesses. Seven people were injured in north Tulsa. Numerous trees were snapped or uprooted and numerous power poles were snapped. The tornado moved east-northeast across Mohawk Park where it snapped and uprooted numerous trees. Several large, metal-framed, industrial buildings were significantly damaged north-northeast of the Tulsa International Airport on N Mingo Road. The tornado then crossed Highway 169 just south of the Bird Creek Bridge where it destroyed several barns and snapped numerous trees along E 56th Street N. Based on this damage, maximum estimated wind in this segment of the tornado was 110 to 120 mph. The tornado continued into Rogers County, Oklahoma.

In Rogers County, the tornado moved east-northeast passing across the northern portion of the Patriot Golf Club and Stone Canyon housing subdivisions. Numerous homes were damaged in this area, some severely. Several homes under construction were destroyed. The tornado crossed Highway 266 destroying a business, damaging a number of homes, destroying barns and outbuildings, and snapping or uprooting numerous trees until it dissipated north of Verdigris. Based on this damage, maximum estimated wind in this segment of the tornado was 110 to 120 mph.
