OKZ004>053 Heavy snow fell across much of Oklahoma beginning as rain and freezing
rain shortly before midnight the evening of the 21st, then changing to
snow during the early morning hours. Most of the snow ended before
noon on the 22nd.
The heaviest snow fell in two east-west oriented bands across central
Oklahoma. The southern band stretched from Apache (in southern Caddo
County) to Lindsay to Byng to Calvin (in central Hughes County).
Snowfall totals in this band were typically from 8 to 9 inches with an
11 to 12 inch maximum in northeastern Pontotoc and southern Hughes
Counties. Specific snowfall totals were 8 inches in Apache, Cox City,
and Lindsay; 9 inches in Rush Springs; 11 inches in Byng; and 12 inches
in Calvin, Allen, Atwood, and Gerty.
A second band extended across north-central Oklahoma from Kingfisher to
Stillwater and Chandler. The snowfall maximum in this area was more
uniform with 7-inch totals in Kingfisher, Chandler, Stillwater,
Mulhall, and north Oklahoma City.
Although no injuries or fatalities were directly caused by the heavy
snow, law enforcement officials attributed over 100 traffic accidents
to snow and ice on roads. One death and at least 25 injuries occurred
in these traffic accidents.
Two accidents involving trucks closed portions of major highways for
several hours around Oklahoma City. Two of three northbound lanes of
I-35 were closed for 4 hours due to an overturned tractor-trailer, and
I-44 westbound was also restricted to one lane for two hours by an
overturned truck.
Other reports included several injuries due to pedestrians slipping on
ice, and the roof of a barn on the Seminole County Fairgrounds
collapsed due to the weight of the snow the afternoon of the 22nd.

Freezing drizzle, occasionally mixed with freezing rain, formed along
the Red River Valley in southern Oklahoma late on the evening of the
13th, then spread northward into central Oklahoma and parts of
northern Oklahoma through mid-morning on the 14th.
Although no injuries or fatalities were directly attributed to the
freezing precipitation, at least 150 traffic accidents were caused by
icy roads across the area. In these accidents 43 injuries and one
fatality were reported.
The fatality occurred just south of Rufe in Choctaw County when a
pickup lost control on an icy bridge and slid into a utility pole.
Another accident in Lawton involved 15 cars but resulted in no
injuries. Over 55 accidents were reported in the Oklahoma City metro
area, 20 with injuries.

Freezing rain began in southern and central Oklahoma early the
morning of the 16th, then changed over to sleet before ending around
mid-afternoon as temperatures rose above freezing. Ice accumulations
on roads, bridges, and overpasses caused over 200 traffic accidents,
including at least 54 injuries and 3 fatalities.
The 3 fatalities occurred in central Oklahoma on major highways. On
I-44 in south Oklahoma City, a man was killed when his car slid into
the back of a tractor-trailer rig. On Highway 9 in McClain County a
woman was killed in a 2-car accident between Norman and Newcastle.
The third fatality occurred on I-40 in El Reno (Canadian County) when
a pickup lost control and overturned, killing the driver.

Severe thunderstorms developed and moved eastward
across central and southern Oklahoma during the
morning, producing damaging winds across much of the
area and hail as large as golf balls in Oklahoma City.
In Cushing in Payne County winds up to 63 mph took
part of the roof off a metal building, blew a tree
down, and blew windshields out of cars. In Agra in
Lincoln County a barn was destroyed. Severe
thunderstorm winds in Hugo in Choctaw County downed
numerous trees and power poles, landing on several
trailer homes and barns. Roofs were also blown off a
shed and a mobile home.
The storms were electrically very active, with 3
reported cases of lightning damage. In Norman in
Cleveland County lightning set fire to a duplex around
9 am, causing about $45,000 in damage. Also in Norman
about an hour later lightning struck and destroyed a
house chimney. In Seminole County southeast of Wolf
an oil tank battery was hit by lightning and set on
fire early in the afternoon.

Severe thunderstorms moved across southwestern and
south-central Oklahoma during the afternoon and early
evening, producing 2 tornados, damaging winds, large
hail, and flash flooding. A second area of
thunderstorms moved across northern Oklahoma during
the afternoon and produced large and damaging hail.
With the storms in southwest Oklahoma 2 tornados were
reported. The first occurred in Tillman County where
a small, brief F0 tornado (gustnado) spun up on the
leading edge of a thunderstorm 3 miles southwest of
Tipton. No damage was reported.
The second tornado, an F1, occurred 3 miles east of
Faxon in Comanche County around 4 pm CST. Along a
path about 1/4 mile long and 33 yards wide, 2 barns
were destroyed, a propane tank was blown over, tops of
trees were twisted and snapped, and power poles were
downed.
Also with these storms in southwest Oklahoma, baseball
sized hail fell in Indiahoma in Comanche County, broke
out car windows east of Duke in Jackson County, and
broke out house windows 3 miles northeast of Tipton in
Tillman County. Flash flooding also became a problem
as water was reported up to car headlights in Comanche
in Stephens County.
As the storms moved eastward into south-central
Oklahoma, thunderstorm winds increased and some damage
was reported. A barn was destroyed by severe
thunderstorm winds near Faxon in Comanche County, and
wind speeds as high as 72 mph were reported south of
Duncan in Stephens County. In Carter County 5 miles
north of Lone Grove, winds destroyed 3 barns and a
wellhouse and did slight damage to 3 houses.
In northern Oklahoma wind-driven hail in severe
thunderstorms caused both crop and property damage.
Quarter to half dollar sized hail in Garfield County
broke out house windows 3 miles south of Fairmont and
5 miles southeast of Garber. In Noble County 6 miles
south of Billings house windows were broken out by
golf ball sized hail. Many wheat fields in Garfield
and Noble Counties were also destroyed.

Thunderstorms developed in southwest Oklahoma
throughout the afternoon and evening then moved
northeastward across south central and central
Oklahoma through the evening, producing 6 tornados,
large hail, damaging straight-line winds, and flash
flooding. Other isolated severe storms in northwest
Oklahoma produced large hail.
The first tornado, a brief F0, occurred on the Red
River 6 miles southwest of Grandfield in Tillman
County and did no reported damage. The storm then
moved into Cotton County where it spawned its second,
third, and fourth tornados. The second tornado was
spotted 4 miles southwest of Devol and the third was
just southeast of Devol. No damage was reported with
either touchdown and both were rated F0.
The fourth and most damaging tornado of the day began
2 miles north of Temple in Cotton County, then moved
into Stephens County and lifted in Corum. Power lines
were downed 2 miles north of Temple as the tornado
formed. In Corum, the roof of a gift shop was
partially removed and a beauty shop housed in a mobile
home trailer was completely destroyed. A semi-tractor
trailer rig was overturned, a roof was lifted off a
church, and a steeple was blown off. 2 barns were
also destroyed. The most severe damage was this
damage in Corum, and the tornado was rated an F2.
The storm continued across Stephens County and
produced a fifth tornado, an F1, in Velma. Trees were
twisted and the roof was blown off a water pump
station. The sixth and final tornado occurred on the
Murray/Garvin County line 2.5 miles northwest of Joy
(or 1.5 miles southeast of Wynnewood). No damage was
reported with this F0 tornado.
Aside from the tornados, strong winds, large hail, and
flash flooding were also reported. Straight line
winds up to 80 mph were reported in Frederick in
Tillman County. Damage from the storms in southern
and central Oklahoma included windows broken out of a
house by baseball sized hail in Tipton, also in
Tillman County. In Stephens County severe thunderstorm
winds damaged trees, signs, and a barn near Corum,
blew down a shed at a cemetery 1 mile north of
Comanche and destroyed a barn in Faxon. In Jefferson
County trees were snapped and sheet iron was blown off
a barn in the northwest part of the county.
In Cleveland County severe thunderstorm winds downed 2
large trees 12 miles east of Noble and snapped 1 foot
tree branches 8 miles east of Noble. In Carter County
power lines were downed near Healdton and 3 barns and
a wellhouse were destroyed 5 miles north of Lone
Grove. 4 houses north of Lone Grove also sustained
slight damage to their roofs. In Love County severe
winds downed power lines 1 mile south of Marietta. In
Hughes County tree limbs were broken 8 miles north of
Holdenville by winds reported at 75 mph. In Bryan
County, 4 foot diameter trees were blown down in
Hendrix and large trees were downed and a trailer was
blown onto a Jeep in Calera.
Significant damage occurred in Seminole County where
strong straight line winds with the thunderstorm gust
front cut a damage path through Wewoka. 21 houses were
damaged, mainly from trees falling on them, and 25
trees were downed across roads.
A car was overturned by flash flood waters in Stephens
County just east of Corum. None of the 4 passengers
were hurt.
The thunderstorms in northwest Oklahoma produced hail
as large as golf balls 17 miles north of Chester in
Major County and 8 miles southwest of Alva in Woods
County.

Oklahoma during the evening produced 3 weak tornados,
large hail, and damaging winds.
The first tornado occurred 2 miles west of Addington
in Jefferson County. The second and third tornados
were in Carter County 3 miles east of Fox and south of
Healdton. No damage was reported with any of the
touchdowns, and all 3 were rated F0.
In addition to the tornados, 2 inch diameter hail was
reported 5 miles northwest of Addington in Jefferson
County. Severe thunderstorm winds in Cotton County
downed power lines and broke windows in several homes
and a school in Temple. In Walters, also in Cotton
County, trees and power lines were downed and 2
storage sheds were knocked over by severe winds.
In Stephens County south of Corum power lines were
downed, and in Grady County 3 miles south-southwest of
Pocasset a large shed was demolished and 3 inch
branches were downed. In Oklahoma County in Bethany
severe thunderstorm winds felled 3 one-foot diameter
trees and several 6 inch branches. In Murray County a
1.5 foot diameter tree was uprooted by winds estimated
at 60 mph 2 miles northeast of Sulphur.

Severe thunderstorms across southern and parts of
central Oklahoma produced large hail and damaging
winds from early morning through early afternoon. Hail
as large as golf balls was reported 4 miles northwest
of Stonewall in Pontotoc County. In Hughes County tree
limbs were downed 3 miles southeast of Gerty and 3
miles east of Citra.
In Purcell in McClain County, lightning struck a large
tree in front of a funeral home, splitting the trunk
and sending splinters as far as a block away. The
exterior of the funeral home sustained major damage,
as all windows and the glass from 2 doors were broken
out by debris. Branches fell onto and damaged the
guttering and siding of the home and a car sitting out
front. The lightning bolt also traveled through the
root system of the tree and caused the cement sidewalk
to break in several places.

reported in Oklaunion in Wilbarger County, and severe
thunderstorm winds downed trees and damaged 2 hay
barns near Windthorst in Archer County. 2 miles
northeast of Oklaunion, in Elliot, hail as large as
quarters was found on the ground a full 24 hours after
the event.

damage, and all were rated at F0.
In addition to the tornados, severe thunderstorms also
dropped baseball sized hail 14 miles west of Benjamin

In all, 10 tornados were confirmed, including a long-track tornado that crossed from Cooke County Texas into Love County Oklahoma and remained on the ground in Oklahoma for 34 miles. Large hail, severe straight-line winds, and flash flooding were also reported. The first tornado occurred with a line of storms in southwestern Oklahoma 10 miles southwest of Mangum in Greer County at 1456CST. The tornado was a brief F0 with no damage reported. The second tornado, an F1, touched down in central Oklahoma 6 miles north of Davis in Murray County. Along a damage path about 2 miles long, 1 mobile home was destroyed, 5 barns and 6 houses were damaged, and power lines and trees were downed. The third tornado spun up from the same storm as it moved across eastern Garvin County. A damage survey revealed a path starting 11 miles south-southwest of Stratford, continuing for 6 miles to a point 6 miles south of Stratford. Along this path, a total of 3 outbuildings were destroyed, while 1 frame house and 8 other outbuildings were damaged. The frame house was located 12 miles south-southwest of Stratford and sustained shingle damage and one broken window. Within 25 ft of the house, a 10-ton box type semi-trailer was picked up and tossed 75 ft onto the roof of a pole barn which collapsed under the wind force and weight of the trailer. All 18 trees (20-24" diameter) near the sight were topped or sheared at the trunk. Along the rest of the damage path, tree damage was extensive and farm outbuildings sustained major damage. Maximum width along this path was 200 yards and the tornado was rated as F1. It is also noteworthy that at least one location in heavy wooded areas was visible where the rear flank downdraft, accompanying the tornado, flattened 15-25 large trees (10-15" diameter) 100-150 ft to the right of the tornado path. The fourth tornado was brief and struck a farm 1 mile west of Mill Creek in Johnston County at 1520CST. A water trough, a 500-gallon diesel tank, 4 metal feed sheds, and the roof of the house were damaged. The porch was destroyed, and a dump truck was overturned. Tree damage was extensive, and this tornado was rated at F1. The fifth tornado occurred with an isolated supercell that moved northeastward from Texas across the Red River into southern Love County, and then north- northeastward into Carter County. Air and ground surveys conducted on May 8 (the day after the tornado) revealed a damage path 500 to 700 yards wide and 34 miles long across Love and Carter Counties in Oklahoma, with damage in places consistent with a strong tornado on the high end of the F3 category. Three fatalities and at least 6 injuries are attributed to this tornado. Following the tornado's path as it moved across Oklahoma, the tornado crossed the Red River into Oklahoma at a point 4 miles south-southeast of Leon (or about 3.5 miles south-southwest of Jimtown) at approximately 1524 CST. The tornado moved northeast and remained near F0/F1 intensity until it reached the Red River RV Ranch on the south side of Highway 96 about 1 mile west of Burneyville. At this RV park, 18 RV's, 12 cabins, 1 store, 1 guard shack, 1 equestrian center, 7 outbuildings, 5 single family homes, and 1 mobile home were destroyed. One other single family home also suffered minor damage. At the entrance to the park, several vehicles, including a delivery van, were rolled off the highway and flipped over. The damage path at this point was 400 to 500 yards wide, and damage was rated as F2. From there, the tornado crossed Highway 96 to the Falconhead Resort area, where the worst damage was suffered. 20 homes were destroyed and 20 others sustained major or minor damage, including numerous brick homes. At least one of these homes lost all but the northeast exterior wall and a few interior walls in the northeast part of the house. An aircraft hangar and a maintenance building were also destroyed. The damage was rated on the high end of F3 at this point, and the path was measured to be 500 to 600 yards wide. One half mile north of the Highway 32/Highway 96 intersection, 2 of the 3 fatalities occurred. An 83- year old female and her 87-year old sister were killed when their frame home on the west side of the road was picked up and blown 50 feet into a wooded area on the east side of the road. Less than a mile north of this site, the 3rd fatality occurred. A 78- year old man was killed in his home, while his wife was severely injured. Widespread tree damage was evident along this entire section of the tornado's path, and the intensity along this stretch was rated as F2. The tornado then decreased to F0/F1 strength and continued north-northeastward across the Love/Carter County Line and toward Ardmore. In Carter County, at least 4 homes, 2 businesses, and 1 public building were destroyed. Four other homes, 5 businesses, and 1 public building received major damage, with minor damage at an additional 5 homes, 6 businesses, and 1 public building. Specifically, on the southwest side of Ardmore, the tornado strengthened and hit a subdivision of new, well-built homes. The worst damage consisted of 1 or 2 homes that were almost completely unroofed, and had some interior walls down. Damage here was rated at F2. The tornado also hit a high school just north of this subdivision, removing portions of the roof and damaging windows. This damage was rated at the high end of the F1 category. The tornado then continued northward, paralleling I- 35 on the west edge of Ardmore, and struck a Uniroyal/Michelin tire plant on the west side of the interstate. Significant damage to the sheet metal exterior and roof were noted; however, no structural damage to the steel frame was apparent. In the parking lot immediately to the east of the plant, dozens of automobiles and pickup trucks were damaged or destroyed. Some were tossed, flipped, and stacked on top of one another. At least 1 semi-truck was flipped over on the southwest side of the plant. Based on the damage to the plant and vehicles, the intensity at this point was rated F2. Immediately north of the tire plant, witnesses reported that the tornado began to go into its dissipation stage. One or two plate glass windows were blown out at a Love's Truck Stop. The canopies over the pump areas and most signs were also destroyed. Damage was rated at F1 here. An electronics warehouse under construction just north of this truck stop had 3 of 4 exterior walls knocked down. At a point about 2 miles north of the Uniroyal/Michelin plant, the tornado took a sharp east- northeast turn and rapidly dissipated at 1614CST. Total damage across Love and Carter Counties exceeded $100 million dollars, with $75 million dollars worth of damage in Ardmore alone. Actual damage at the Uniroyal Plant was valued at $45 million, and later production losses due to the damage were estimated at 1.5 million tires. The sixth through eighth tornados occurred simultaneously with the Love/Carter County tornado, but with a separate storm. The sixth tornado was a brief F0 touchdown near Saskawa in Seminole County around 1545CST. Two-inch tree limbs were downed, but no other damage was reported. The storm then moved into Hughes County and produced the seventh tornado 5 miles south of Holdenville at 1555CST. Along its 1- mile track, a small house was shifted 30 feet off its foundation and a wall was blown out. Other houses nearby sustained only minor roof damage. Two large trees were also uprooted. Damage was rated at F0 by a survey team. This same storm continued northeastward and produced the eighth tornado 1 mile southwest of Yeager at 1608CST, where a small outbuilding was destroyed. This tornado remained on the ground as it moved through Yeager and then to 2 miles south of Wetumka. In Yeager a barn and 2 other outbuildings were destroyed, and a frame house was heavily damaged. Two horse trailers were moved 75 feet and 40 trees sustained serious damage. The damage path was about 50 yards wide at this point and the damage was rated F2. The ninth and tenth tornados occurred from the same isolated supercell that earlier produced the Love/Carter County tornado. The ninth tornado, an F1, began near Gene Autry in Carter County at 1629CST, moved into Murray County, and dissipated in Dougherty at 1636CST. Along this 3 mile path, 2 barns and 1 storage building were destroyed, windows were blown out of 25 homes, and part of a lumber company roof was blown off. Two homes and 1 pickup were also damaged by fallen trees. The tenth tornado was a brief F1 north of Sulphur in Murray County at 1653CST. A barn was destroyed, a trailer was blown over, and a van was picked up and moved. In addition to these tornados, the storms also produced baseball sized hail in Carter and 3 miles southeast of Carter in Beckham County. Wind speeds up to 70 mph were reported 2 miles northwest of Verden in Caddo County and in Custer City in Custer County, where minor building damage was also reported. Also in Custer County 4 miles west of Arapahoe, a 10-inch tree was downed. Later in the afternoon severe thunderstorm winds in Clinton broke the plate glass windows out of a store, destroyed fences and a storage shed, and uprooted and/or snapped 2 large trees. Three other businesses sustained major roof damage, and a mobile home was flipped over onto a car. Total damage in Clinton was estimated at $117,000. Other straight-line wind damage was reported in Grady County in Amber, where a roof was blown off of a mobile home, injuring a woman. A neighboring brick home also sustained extensive damage, with large portions of the roof blown off and a new addition destroyed. A nearby camper was also tossed on end. In Greer County in Willow, 18 houses and 2 businesses were damaged by severe thunderstorm winds. Numerous trees and power lines were also downed. In Watonga in Blaine County, 18-inch trees were snapped, 3 roofs were blown off houses, an airplane hangar was destroyed, and 3 power poles were downed by strong winds. In Lincoln County in Stroud severe thunderstorm winds damaged one home and 4 outbuildings, and uprooted several large trees. In Newkirk in Kay County and in Stephens County in Marlow and 1 mile west-southwest of Marlow, branches up to 6-inches were snapped. A tree also blew onto a car in Marlow. In Grant County 5 miles southeast of Renfro, severe thunderstorm winds downed 8-inch tree limbs and blew shingles off a house. In Noble County in Perry, trees were downed, and a 3-inch tree was also uprooted in Wayne in McClain County. In Pontotoc County in Ada, lightning struck and set fire to a house, resulting in $3000 in damage. Lightning also struck a home 1 mile west-southwest of Marlow, damaging the appliances but did not set the house on fire. In Comanche County 12 miles east- northeast of Geronimo lightning struck an antenna, causing the TV to explode and setting fire to the house. Damage to the house and contents was estimated at $40,000. Flash flooding was reported in Stephens County east of Marlow, in Marlow, and in Duncan due to widespread street flooding, including Highway 81 south of Duncan. In Grady County in Rush Springs, part of downtown was closed due to high water, and in Murray County in Dougherty, flooding caused the evacuation of 4 homes and the post office. In Carter County near Lone Grove, flash flooding washed out a bridge. Repair costs were placed at $23,000. The tornado was spotted by a highway patrol officer as it touched down in Woods County about 12 miles south of Dacoma, just west of the Alfalfa County line. The tornado then moved east-northeast into Alfalfa County and evolved into a multiple-vortex tornado as it reached the Carmen area. The tornado finally lifted as it approached McWillie. Damage was concentrated in the Carmen area of Alfalfa County and included: a travel trailer flipped and destroyed south of Carmen and 4 houses and several outbuildings damaged from 1 mile south to 2 miles east of Carmen. In the McWillie area a barn was damaged. Highlines and trees were downed along much of this path. Based on video and eyewitness reports, the tornado was rated as an F2. Other reports from severe thunderstorms included a large peach tree blown down by straight-line winds 7 miles southeast of Perry in Noble County. Wind speeds as high as 80 mph were reported 10 miles north of Springer in Murray County, and in Ryan in Jefferson County where around 50 utility poles were downed. Other damage in Jefferson County included a store front window shattered and a horse barn flattened in Waurika by winds estimated at 70 mph. In Ringling a tree was split by severe straight-line winds. In Carter County 2 miles south of Fox, a mobile home, a camping trailer, and an outbuilding were destroyed. Extensive roof damage was also done to 1 home, a tree blew over onto a car, and another tree blew down into a kitchen. Also in Carter County trees and power lines were downed in Ardmore. Trees and power lines were also reported down in Garvin County in Wynnewood and in Murray County in Sulphur. 2-inch limbs were snapped 3 miles east of Tishomingo in Johnston County. In Pontotoc County in Ada wind speeds were estimated at 60 mph. Damage included: at least 3 large trees downed, 3 power poles snapped, stop signs flattened, a roof blown off a packing plant, and several large windows blown out of a car dealership. In Stringtown in Atoka County a 60 by 70 foot section of roof was lifted off of the dining hall of a prison. Damage was estimated at $200,000. Flash flooding also became a problem in some areas of Stephens County. 6 inches of water covered several streets in Marlow. Oklahoma County, 23 2347CST 0 0 3 High Wind Srn Oklahoma City and Midwest City Strong outflow in southern Oklahoma City (not directly associated with a severe thunderstorm) produced wind gusts near 70 mph at Tinker AFB. In Oklahoma County in Oklahoma City widespread street and bridge flooding was reported, with numerous cars stranded in high water. Lightning Creek flooded and resulted in the flooding and evacuation of 2 homes in southwest Oklahoma City. In Grady County water covered US 81 south of Minco, and flood waters carried 1 foot diameter logs and other debris onto Highway 37 east of Tuttle, blocking the roadway. In Pottawatomie County north of Shawnee, water from a small drainage creek rose into at least 4 homes, resulting in their evacuation. In Cleveland County in Norman, widespread street and bridge flooding made numerous roads impassible. The first report came from the north part of the town at about 0645CST, when water flowed across a bridge on Rock Creek Road and reached up to car headlights in places. Other reports of flash flooding followed through about 0830CST. Water as high as 12 inches rose into several houses and apartments. About 20 cars were stranded in water as high as car windshields, and Franklin Road washed out in several places. A school bus driver and two children were stranded and had to be rescued after their bus stalled on a flooded bridge in water up to the bus headlights. Significant damage occurred in Vernon with straight- line winds along a strong gust front. Numerous fences and trees as large as 4-feet in diameter and fences were downed (3 fell onto houses), 8 homes received major roof damage, and 4 storage buildings were destroyed. In addition, 2 businesses were damaged: parts of the roof were blown off a boot store, and a second store received major air conditioner and roof damage. Other reports included nickel sized hail in Vernon in Wilbarger County and water covering Highway 183 north of Vernon in Wilbarger County.

The largest hail was reported in Agra in Lincoln County,
where hail up to 3-inch diameter broke out more than 100
windows in a school and caused $30,000 in total damage.
Throughout Agra other buildings sustained major roof
damage and car windows were cracked and shattered.
Severe thunderstorm winds were measured at 60 mph by the
Oklahoma Mesonet in Guthrie in Logan County. These
winds downed tree limbs just south of Guthrie. In Major
County in Isabella, 2-inch limbs were also downed by
severe winds.
Lightning struck and set fire to a house in Orion in
Dewey County, burning it to the ground. Later in the
day, lightning struck and set fire to the roof of a home
in Durant in Bryan County. Damage to this home was
estimated at $1200.

Oklahoma and continued into the early morning hours of
the 4th. Lightning damage, hail, severe winds, flash
flooding, and 6 tornados were reported with these
storms.
The first tornado was a brief F0 in Harmon County, about
15 miles south-southwest of Gould on the Red River.
(This is the same tornado reported in Western North
Texas 11 miles northwest of Goodlett in Hardeman County,
Texas.)
The second tornado occurred in Jackson County 9 miles
east of Duke. At this location 3 mobile homes were
destroyed and a house porch and a barn door were blown
away. Four utility poles were snapped and several trees
were uprooted. This damage was rated as F1.
The third tornado occurred in central Oklahoma in
Canadian County north of Union City. A survey revealed
a damage path 5 miles long and 200 yards wide, beginning
3 miles north-northeast of Union City and extending
northeast to 1 mile south of Banner. The tornado was
rated as F1 based on the damage survey and eyewitness
reports.
Along this path, power poles were downed and trees
sustained extensive damage. About 5 miles northeast of
Union City, a metal barn was picked up and thrown 100
yards across a road (rated F1). At another farm nearby
outbuildings and a barn were destroyed, windows were
blown out of a house, a chimney was destroyed, and
shingles were stripped from the house roof. This damage
was rated F0.
One mile farther northeast along the path, another farm
sustained F1 damage. Outbuildings were destroyed, a
barn was damaged, and house shingles and windows were
damaged. A large cattle feeder was blown 75 yards into
a swimming pool. At the end of the tornado's path (1
mile south of Banner), a pole barn was completely
destroyed by F1 tornado winds.
The fourth tornado was spotted 4 miles southwest of
Headrick in Jackson County. The fifth tornado was
sighted 5 miles southwest of Frederick in Tillman
County, and the sixth tornado was later spotted 2 miles
north of Frederick. No damage was reported with any of
these tornados, and all were rated as F0.
The same storm that produced these tornados in Jackson
County also produced hail as large as tennis balls in
Altus in Jackson County.
Numerous reports of severe straight-line winds were
received, including many reports of damage. In Harmon
County 10 miles south of Gould, 10 utility poles were
downed along Highway 5. In Hollis (also in Harmon
County) severe thunderstorm winds measured at 60 mph by
the Oklahoma Mesonet downed 11 power poles and uprooted
2-foot diameter trees.
One mile north of Union City in Canadian County, a 2-
foot tree was downed across a road and 2 railroad cars
were tipped over onto a third railroad car. Two utility
sheds and 1 camper were destroyed, a semi truck was
turned over, and several other outbuildings sustained
minor damage. Also in Canadian County, 6-inch limbs
were snapped 8 miles northwest of Union City, and power
lines and 8-inch tree limbs were downed 3 miles west-
southwest of Union City. Three miles north of Union
City windows were broken out of a country store by hen
egg sized hail and strong winds.
At Altus in Jackson County, winds measured as high as 82
mph destroyed 2 mobile homes and 1 night club. A truck
repair facility and a restaurant lost parts of their
roofs, and an abandoned hotel collapsed. The only
reported injury was a woman who was severely cut when
her plate glass window shattered. Total property damage
was estimated at $475,000 in Altus and $600,000
throughout the rest of Jackson County.
Severe thunderstorm winds in McClain County in Cole
destroyed 2 barns and 1 tractor shed for a total of
$17,000 damage. Three other barns were also destroyed
and a mobile home lost its windows. Also in McClain
County 7 miles southwest of Newcastle, severe
thunderstorm winds blew a carport into a field, and
considerable tree damage was reported 3 miles south of
Purcell.
In Caddo County in Eakly, 60 mph winds uprooted trees,
tore the roof off a new barn, and downed large trees
onto the Post Office. In Washita County in Cowden 60
mph winds downed 4-inch limbs and split some trees. In
Chickasha in Grady County 3-foot trees were downed or
split.
Flash flooding also became a serious concern, as the
ground reached saturation from the previous several
days' rain. In Harmon County all roads into Hollis were
flooded and 90 homes in Hollis and the surrounding area
were flooded. Several hours later Highway 62 between
Hollis and the Texas state line was closed. In Jackson
County in Altus, 6 to 8 inches of water flowed across
many roads at 2120CST. Later in the evening, at
2300CST, 2 feet of water covered the fire department
parking lot and a car was reported to be "floating" in
a department store parking lot.
In Canadian County east of Union City, 6 inches of water
covered Highway 152, and in Logan County in Guthrie
several feet of water flooded some buildings. In Caddo
County several county roads just outside of Eakly were
washed out by flash flood waters, and several areas in
Apache were flooded. In Kiowa County south of Hobart
water covered Highway 183 for a 2-mile stretch, closing
the road. In Comanche County streets were flooded
throughout Lawton.
In northwest Oklahoma City in Oklahoma County, lightning
struck a small oil refinery, setting it on fire. A few
hours later, lightning struck and set fire to a house in
central Oklahoma City. Both the husband and wife
initially escaped the house safely; however, the man
went back into the house (apparently to get dressed) and
was then killed in the fire.
North of Elk City in Beckham County, lightning struck
the TV antenna on the roof of a house, damaging the
sheetrock in the ceiling and breaking 2 windows. Damage
was estimated at $5,000.

Midday thunderstorms in southwest Oklahoma caused flash
flooding in Harmon and Greer Counties. Widespread
street flooding was reported in Hollis in Harmon County,
including Highway 62 west of Hollis. In Greer County in
Granite Highway 6 south of Granite was partly washed out
and 1 to 2 feet of water covered some roads.

Afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced large hail,
damaging winds, and flash flooding across parts of
central and southern Oklahoma. Hail as large as
quarters was reported 6 miles west of Fittstown in
Pontotoc County.
In Davidson in Tillman County large trees were downed by
winds that reached at least 75 mph. In Grandfield, also
in Tillman County, wind speeds were measured at 94 mph
by the Oklahoma Mesonet and 9 utility poles were downed.
Trees were also downed in Comanche County in Geronimo.
Flash flooding was widespread across Tillman County as
all towns in the county reported flooding, including
Grandfield, Frederick, Hollister, and Davidson. Highway
183 south of Frederick was also flooded.
In Stephens County Highway 81 was flooded in Marlow, and
in Murray County an unoccupied car was washed away at
Turner Falls.

The second tornado, described by spotters as rope-like,
also occurred in Garfield County near Waukomis. No
damage was reported with either tornado and both were
rated as F0.
These storms also produced golf ball sized hail in
Garfield County 4 miles northeast of Drummond and at
Vance AFB in Enid. In Noble County in Lucien, hail also
reached 1.75 inches in diameter.
A single severe storm in southern Oklahoma produced hail
up to 3/4 inch diameter in Ringling in Jefferson County
and quarter sized hail 3 miles south of Healdton in
Carter County.

Severe thunderstorms persisted throughout the evening in
northwest Oklahoma, producing 2 tornados, large hail,
and damaging winds.
The first tornado, an F1, began in Woodward County 2
miles north of Mooreland, moved east for 1/4 mile, and
lifted 3 miles northeast of Mooreland. Several trees
were uprooted, 4 outbuildings were destroyed, and 2 cars
were totalled by fallen trees.
The second tornado occurred 4 miles west of Waynoka in
Woods County. No damage was reported and this tornado
was rated as F0.
The largest hail fell 12 miles southeast of Woodward in
Woodward County, where hail stones reached 4.25 inches
in diameter.
Severe straight-line winds were estimated at 75 mph in
Cherokee in Alfalfa County. In Waynoka in Woods County,
severe thunderstorm winds broke house windows, uprooted
trees, and caused part of the roof of a packing plant to
collapse. Total damage in Woods County was estimated at
$10,000.

Severe thunderstorms moved across northern Oklahoma
during the afternoon of the 8th and continued through
early morning on the 9th. Lightning, large hail,
damaging winds, flash flooding, and 3 tornados were
reported.
The first tornado occurred in Selman in Harper County,
where it blew a mobile home over. One of the occupants,
a woman, was severely injured. The second tornado was
a brief F0 north-northeast of Shattuck in Ellis County.
The third tornado was a large rain-wrapped tornado in
Roger Mills County that moved from 8 miles north-
northwest of Reydon to 11 miles north of Reydon. The
tornado blew 3/4 of the roof off one brick home and
parts of the roof off another. A tractor trailer was
blown over, trees were uprooted, and a wellhouse was
destroyed. From spotter and damage reports, the tornado
was rated as F2.
Damage across northern Oklahoma was also caused by
severe straight-line winds, particularly in Woods
County. Four miles southwest of Plainview a trailer
house was destroyed, injuring the occupant. Tree limbs
as large as 8-inch diameter were also downed in the
area. In Waynoka 3-inch limbs were downed, and 17 miles
southeast of Waynoka trees were downed.
In Harper County 14 miles east-southeast of Buffalo
another man was injured when his mobile home was
overturned by severe thunderstorm winds. In Garfield
County 1 mile east of Breckinridge a shed was blown onto
a highway.
Hail as large as golf balls fell in Shattuck in Ellis
County, 2 miles north of Jet in Alfalfa County, 2 miles
west of Durham in Roger Mills County, and 11 miles
south-southwest of Woodward in Woodward County.
Flash flooding was reported in Woods County where water
was reported over many roads, including 1 foot of water
over US 64 four miles east of Alva and 6 inches of water
over US 281 north of Hopeton. In Kingfisher County 4
miles east of Kingfisher, 5 feet of water covered SH 33
at an underpass with 8 inches covering the road
elsewhere. In Alfalfa County water covered numerous
county roads southwest of Cherokee, and in Garfield
County water covered several roads south of Enid.
In Woods County in Dacoma, lightning struck a house,
blasting a hole in the roof. Fortunately the rain
quickly extinguished the resulting fire.

Persistent thunderstorms in central Oklahoma produced
severe winds, flash flooding, and 2 tornados.
Both tornados occurred in Lincoln County during the
morning, the first in Kendrick and the second 5 miles
north of Stroud. A damage survey found damage in
Kendrick consistent with an F1 tornado. Specifically,
the roof was removed from a large wooden barn and part
of roof was removed from a small shop. Over 30 large
trees received heavy branch damage and another 4 were
uprooted or sheared at the trunk.
Five miles north of Stroud, a second tornado destroyed
the garage of a brick home. This and extensive nearby
tree damage were rated as F2.
Straight-line wind damage associated with this storm was
extensive, stretching from 3 miles northwest to 6 miles
north of Stroud. In all, over 2 miles of power poles
were downed of snapped, 9 homes received minor roof
damage, 1 trailer home was destroyed, over 50 large
trees were pushed over or snapped at the base, and about
200 trees received extensive, major branch damage.
Flash flooding was reported in Oklahoma County in
Spencer where streets were flooded and in Arcadia where
2 feet of water covered Highway 66.
In northwest Oklahoma City in Oklahoma County a woman's
car stalled in high water on MacArthur Road just north
of Britton Road. While trying to walk to higher ground,
she was swept by the current into a nearby drainage
ditch and drowned. The 33-year old woman was found
several hours later in Ski Island Lake.
Flash flooding also occurred in Edmond where about 15
homes flooded when water backed up by clogged storm
drains. In Yukon in Canadian County, the intersection of
Council Road and Reno was under water, and in Guthrie in
Logan County SH 33 was closed due to high water. One
man was stranded in Guthrie when trying to drive across
a flooded road. He was rescued by fire fighters in a
boat. In Coyle in Payne County, high water covered
Highway 177 and SH 33. In Stillwater in Payne County,
flash flooding from Stillwater Creek and its tributaries
caused a state of emergency to be declared, streets were
closed, apartments were evacuated, and one school closed
was closed.
At Davidson, in Tillman County, flash flooding forced 13
families out of their homes on June 5th, and again on
the 10th. They were evacuated by boat through depths
approaching 5 feet. Eleven houses were significantly
damaged; 3 destroyed. Sanitary sewer line leaks created
a community health hazard.

Severe thunderstorms began in southern Oklahoma during
the afternoon of June 9th, and continued through early
morning of the 10th. Other severe thunderstorms
developed in northern and central Oklahoma during the
late afternoon and evening of the 9th. In all, large
hail, severe straight-line winds, flash flooding, and 9
tornados were reported.
The first 5 tornados occurred with a single storm in
eastern Greer County early in the afternoon. The first
tornado occurred 1 mile west of Mangum, and the second
occurred 4 miles south of Granite. The third tornado
was reported 5 miles south of Granite at Highway 6 and
US 283, and the fourth was spotted 7 miles south of
Granite on Highway 6. The 5th tornado was spotted 5
miles southeast of Granite. No damage was reported with
any of these tornados, and all were rated as F0.
The sixth tornado occurred at the Lugert dam 1 mile
north-northeast of Lugert in Kiowa County. No damage
was reported along its path, and the tornado was rated
F0. The seventh tornado, a brief F0, also occurred in
Kiowa County 6 miles south of Gotebo.
The eighth tornado, an F2, occurred with a separate
storm in Seminole County in central Oklahoma early in
the evening. The damage path was 5.25 miles long and
400 yards wide, at its maximum width. The tornado was
first spotted south of Seminole near the intersection of
Highway 125 and Highway 377. It travelled east-
northeast, crossed Highway 361 and Highway 9 east, and
then lifted 2 miles east of Seminole north of Highway 9.
At least 12 houses in 2 housing additions (1/4 mile
north of 361 and Highway 9) received extensive damage.
In southeast Seminole, 16 homes sustained minor damage
and 1 home had major damage. One death was attributed
indirectly to the tornado, when a man suffered a heart
attack while taking shelter from the storm.
The ninth and final tornado was reported 4 miles
southwest of Grandfield in Tillman County. No damage
was reported and the tornado was rated as F0.
The largest hail reported with these storms reached 2-
inch diameter 1 mile west of Mangum in Greer County and
at Hobart Municipal Airport south of Hobart in Kiowa
County.
Severe thunderstorm winds gusted to 67 mph at the
Oklahoma Mesonet site at Red Rock in Noble County.
In addition, flash flooding was reported in southwest
Oklahoma. In Cotton County Highway 281 was closed south
of Cookietown, Highway 70 was flooded in Taylor, and
Highway 5 was flooded near Walters. In Tillman County
Highway 70 was closed southwest of Grandfield.

Daytime thunderstorms in northern and extreme southern
Oklahoma produced hail, severe straight-line winds,
flash flooding, and lightning damage.
Hail as large as golf balls was reported in southern
Oklahoma at Davidson in Tillman County, while severe
thunderstorm winds in northern Oklahoma reached 70 mph
at Fay in Dewey County.
In southern Oklahoma in Cotton County, Highway 277 was
completely flooded near Walters and Highway 5B was
closed north of Taylor. Highway 36 north was also closed
north of Grandfield in Tillman County.
In northern Oklahoma flash flooding was widespread, with
reports of flooding in Alfalfa, Blaine, Grant, and
Kingfisher Counties. In Alfalfa County water covered
roads east of Byron and the Eagle Creek Bridge was
closed west of Carmen.
In Blaine County Highway 33 east of Watonga and SH 8
from Watonga to Okeene were closed due to high water.
In Grant County high water was reported on US 81 near
Jefferson. In Kingfisher County Highway 81 north of
Kingfisher was closed due to flooding of Kingfisher
Creek, and SH 51 14 miles west of Hennessey was closed
at the Cimarron River bridge due to flash flooding.
In Blaine County, lightning struck and ignited an oil
tank 5 miles southeast of Okeene.
In southern Oklahoma lightning struck an oil storage
tank at Addington in Jefferson County, blowing the lid
off and igniting a fire. Two fire fighters assisting
from Texas were killed while fighting the blaze. Damage
was estimated at 2.5 to 3 million dollars.
After almost 10 consecutive days of thunderstorms during
the first days of June, flash flooding gave way to
widespread river and stream flooding. Moderate to
severe river overflows extended from tributaries to the
Red River and its mainstem, to major tributaries to the
Arkansas River in central portions of Oklahoma.
More than 40 river forecast/warning points experienced
flooding, fifteen of which had been flooded previously
in May. Sixteen points crested above flood twice, while
three stations took triple hits. Cities, towns, and
countless suburban areas saw varying degrees of
inundation, ranging from shallow to life-threatening and
destructive depths. Hundreds of miles of highways were
closed. Rescues of stranded motorists and vehicles
washed away were too many to list.
The City of Guthrie in Logan County was severed by a
record flood on Cottonwood Creek. Cottonwood Creek at
Guthrie rose above flood stage on the 4th and crested at
25.3 feet on the 5th. Four days later, the creek rose
above flood stage once again and crested at a record
30.6 feet. Flood stage at Guthrie is 22 feet. This
deepest overflow in history closed both Noble Avenue (OK
Hwy 33) east/west and Division Street (US Hwy 77)
north/south. Sixteen businesses along Noble Ave.
sustained heavy damages; about 6 beyond repair. Two
church buildings were flooded; one of which was
destroyed. About 60 homes were flooded, to depths up
to 3 feet; others were destroyed. A 60-year-old steel
truss bridge was toppled.
North of Guthrie, US Hwy 77 was washed out near the
Cimarron River Bridge, as the Cimarron River crested at
16.3 feet on the 10th. The river remained above its
flood stage of 14 feet for 3 days. The Cimarron River
also briefly closed the Hwy 33 bridge east of Coyle.
Kingfisher (in Kingfisher County) had combined overflows
from Kingfisher Creek and its tributary Uncle John
Creek. Kingfisher Creek rose above flood stage and
crested at 23.6 feet on the 9th, and Uncle John Creek
rose to a crest of 22.7 feet, also on the 9th. Flood
stages for the two creeks are 20 and 21.5 feet
respectively. Flooding affected a 60 block area,
encompassing about 100 homes and forcing the evacuation
of 38 families. Kingfisher Creek blocked traffic on
Highway US 81 northward, and west access to town via
Highway OK 33. Uncle John Creek closed Highway OK33 to
the east.
In Anadarko, Caddo County OK, the Washita River rose
above its flood stage of 19 feet on the 4th, crested at
25.4 feet on the 6th, and did not fall below flood stage
until the 8th. The river flooded the city park, closing
an area for recreational vehicles and flooding city
facilities. Floodwaters also surrounded the city sewer
plant and washed out its access road. Near the town of
Verden, a few miles downstream from Anadarko, six
persons were rescued from their rural home via
helicopter as currents proved too swift for evacuation
via boat. Highway OK 62 was closed near Verden.
Further downstream, in and near Chickasha in Grady
County, several homes and commercial structures were
flooded up to 4 feet deep. Hundreds of acres of
farmland were lost to riverbank erosion in Grady County.
Flood stage of the Washita River 3 miles northwest of
Chickasha is 19 feet. The river crested at 26.3 feet on
the 7th, in the middle of 5 days above flood stage.
In Blackwell, Kay County OK, the Chikaskia River rose
above flood stage (29 feet) on the 4th and remained
above flood stage through the 12th. It crested twice:
first on the 5th at 29.3 feet and again on the 9th at
32.4 feet. About a ten-block area of low-lying homes
and streets suffered shallow flooding as the Chikaskia
River swelled out of its banks for the second time in 4
days.
In Canadian County OK, from near El Reno to Yukon to the
west edge of Oklahoma City suburban homesteads and roads
saw minor overflows from the North Canadian River. At
Yukon, the river flooded for three days from the 9th
through the 11th, cresting at 19.2 feet on the 10th (6.2
feet above flood stage).
In south Shawnee, Pottawatomie County OK, several
families were evacuated from the Granger Addition before
the North Canadian River flooded streets and five or six
homes, some to depths approaching 3 feet. Flood stage
on the North Canadian River 2 miles west of Shawnee is
18 feet. The river crested on the 11th at 18.9 feet at
this site.
East Cache Creek overflowed croplands from Ellsworth Dam
near Apache OK in Caddo County, downstream to Walters in
Cotton County, closing all road crossings in Comanche
County between the two sites. A gaging site 2 miles
east of Walters recorded a crest of 29.9 feet on the
11th, 9.9 feet above flood stage.
At Warwick in Lincoln County, the Deep Fork River closed
OK Highway 66 west of town and washed out the bridge
approach to OK 18 south of town. Flood stage is 16
feet, and the river crested at 18.2 feet on the 4th, and
again at 21.2 feet on the 9th.
In Garfield County, Turkey Creek closed rural roads and
flooded farms near Lahoma, Bison and Green Valley OK.
Eagle Chief Creek flooded streets in Dacoma in Woods
County, and forced evacuation from flooded homes while
isolating Aline and flooded businesses in Carmen, both
in Alfalfa County OK. Access was also closed to the
town of Cherokee by overflows from Cottonwood Canyon and
Clay Creek.
Thousands of acres of agricultural lands across western,
central, and southeastern Oklahoma were severely
flooded, destroying fences, machinery, freshly planted
cotton, wheat ready for harvest, watermelon and other
crops, and drowning or dispersing hundreds of cattle.
Major damages were sustained by county highways and
bridges too numerous to list. Nineteen Oklahoma
counties were declared disaster areas by FEMA due to
river flooding.

Hail as large as tennis balls was reported in Knox City
in Knox County, and wind speeds were estimated at 100
mph 5 miles north of Vernon in Wilbarger County.
Flash flooding was reported in Foard County 19 miles
west of Crowell where Highway 70 was flooded and in
Crowell where numerous streets were flooded. In
Wilbarger County several cars stalled in high water in
Vernon and Highway 283 north of Vernon was flooded.
Later in the day, water rose above curbs in Vernon and
some intersections were consequently closed. In Hardeman
County street flooding was reported in Quanah.

Afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced flash
flooding, severe straight-line winds, hail as large as
softballs, and 13 tornados as they moved across western
North Texas.
The first 6 tornados were spawned by a single storm as
it moved across Hardeman County and into western
Wilbarger County. The first 5 of these 6 tornados
occurred south of Chillicothe in Hardeman County, and
spotters reported that each tornado was a brief F0
causing no damage. The sixth tornado, located 10 miles
west of Vernon in Wilbarger County, was multi-vortex in
structure; however, no damage was reported and this
tornado was also rated as F0.
The 7th and 8th tornados occurred simultaneously at
1900CST with separate storms 5 miles northwest of
Burkburnett and 7 miles east of Electra in Wichita
County. No damage was reported and both were rated as
F0.
The 9th through 13th tornados occurred as the storms
continued to move eastward across Wichita County. The
9th tornado was spotted 9 miles west of Iowa Park. The
10th tornado touched down near the A/C Delco plant south
of Burkburnett, slightly damaging roofs in the area.
The 11th tornado was reported east of Burkburnett. The
12th and 13th tornados were spotted 6 miles west of
Burkburnett and just west of Burkburnett respectively.
Once again, no significant damage occurred with any of
the tornados and all were rated as F0.
In addition to the tornados, severe thunderstorm winds
reached 85 mph at Shepherd AFB in Wichita County.
Softball sized hail was reported 8 miles north of
Crowell in Foard County, 13 miles south of Quanah in
Hardeman County, and 10 miles northwest of Vernon in
Wilbarger County.
Flash flooding began in Vernon in Wilbarger County at
1900CST, when Highway 283 north of town was under water
and some flooding of streets and homes was reported on
the southwest side of Vernon. Later, at 2050CST,
Highway 283 south of town was closed, Highway 70 to
Crowell was closed, and 1 foot of water covered some
roads in Vernon.

Flash flood problems continued to escalate in western
parts of North Texas as several rounds of thunderstorms
moved across the area during the day on the 10th. In
Wilbarger County in southwest Vernon, 3 feet of water
flooded some homes. Just over an hour later, 6 other
homes were flooded with 6-8" water. Highway 183 2 miles
south of Vernon was flooded with 1.5 ft water from
Paradise Creek, and 1 foot of water covered US 70 west.
Finally, a bridge washed out 3 miles northeast of
Vernon.
In addition to the flash flooding, severe thunderstorm
winds in Archer County downed 2-inch limbs 6 miles
southwest of Holliday, and quarter-sized hail was
reported 2 miles southwest of Munday in Knox County.
After almost 10 consecutive days of thunderstorms across
southern Oklahoma and north Texas, flash flooding gave
way to widespread river and stream flooding. Moderate
to severe river overflows affected many of the Texas
tributaries to the Red River and its mainstem across
western parts of north Texas.
At Vernon, Wilbarger County, the Pease River spilled
into northern parts of town and the Vernon State
Hospital grounds as the river rose to a crest of 19.1
feet, 4.1 feet above flood stage, on the 5th. Highway
US 283 northward and US 70 west were blocked. A barn
was lost, along with several cattle. Paradise Creek
covered US 287 and state roads to the east and south,
leaving Vernon isolated from all directions.
Firefighters evacuated a dozen homes in NW and SW
Vernon. Over 30 homes sustained minor flooding, with
total damages estimated at about $375,000.
In Wilbarger County, Beaver Creek below Santa Rosa Lake
closed Highway US 183 and threatened two homesteads near
the Waggoner Ranch headquarters, and blocked FM 1181.
Five county bridges were washed out or rendered unsafe,
costing about $575,000 to repair. Beaver Creek crested
at 33 feet on the 5th, 9 feet above flood stage at a
gaging site 9 miles south of Electra.
In Wichita Falls, Wichita County, the Wichita River
caused varying degrees of minor flooding in areas around
Lucy Park, including the Sheraton Hotel and Tanglewood.
Three teenage boys were rescued by firefighters, from a
bridge in Lucy Park. The Wichita River rose above its
flood stage of 18 feet on the 8th and remained above
flood stage until the 12th in Wichita Falls. The river
crested twice during this time: at 18.5 feet on the 8th
and at 19.7 feet on the 11th.
Near Burkburnett in Wichita County, the Red River
mainstem canceled activities at the Boy Scouts' Camp
Perkins, with about 4 feet of water near its
headquarters. Damages to the swimming pool, roads, and
other camp facilities were estimated at $60,000. The
Red River rose to a crest of 15.4 feet on the 6th, 6.4
feet above flood stage at the si9te 3 miles north of
Burkburnett.
In Quanah, Hardeman County, some residents of Star
Street Apartments were evacuated. Highway TX 6 was
closed south of town.
In and near Chillicothe, Highway US 287 was flooded. An
18-wheel truck was washed off the road. Farm Rd 1167
was under 12 feet of water.

Evening and late night severe thunderstorms in central and southern Oklahoma produced
large hail, damaging winds, and flash flooding.
Hail as large as baseballs was reported 8 miles east of Asher in Pottawatomie County.
Severe thunderstorm winds of 60 mph were reported 2 miles south of Pontotoc in Johnston
County and in Konawa in Seminole County. Schools in Konawa suffered $100,000 in damage
from the wind and hail.
Other damage from severe thunderstorm winds and wind-driven hail occurred in Pontotoc
County, largely in Ada. In Ada 3 large trees were downed, part of a garage roof was
destroyed, a 3-foot tree was blown over onto a car and house, and skylights were knocked
out of a furniture store. Windows were broken out of a residence, a car showroom, and
cars on 4 car lots. Fences and bleachers were damaged at a city park, several highway
road signs were blown down, and a storage shed and block building were destroyed. Roofs
throughout town suffered extensive damage from wind-driven hail, and several hundred
birds roosting in trees were killed.
Elsewhere in Pontotoc County, an 18-inch tree was blown over and numerous limbs were
downed 2 miles west of Fittstown and 2-inch limbs were downed 7 miles south of Fittstown.
Flash flooding occurred in Wewoka in Seminole County, where roads were closed in town. In
Coal County 5 miles south of Tupelo, 2 feet of water flooded fields due to flash flooding
of Clear Boggy Creek.

The tornado was reported 3 miles north of Ravia in Johnston County, where several large
trees were downed and the roof was blown off a barn. The damage was rated as F1.
The largest hail was also reported in Johnston County 5 miles south of Mill Creek, where
hail as large as half-dollars fell.
Severe thunderstorm winds downed an 18-inch tree in Carter County 5 miles east of Gene
Autry and 2-inch limbs in Olney in Coal County.

An isolated tornado formed from a high-based thunderstorm in southwest Oklahoma. The
tornado was spotted by the county sheriff and was described as a "landspout". It stayed
on the ground for about 8 minutes and was estimated at 45 to 65 yards wide. The tornado
remained in open country and no damage occurred.

Lightning struck the support pole of a tent on Fort Sill Army Base, injuring all 26
occupants. Nine of the marines were admitted to the hospital for the night, 3 into the

however, some of the men reported feeling "tingling sensations" through the next day.

quarters 1 mile east of Catesby in Ellis County. A few hours later a wind gust was
measured at 84 mph at the Oklahoma Mesonet site in west of Freedom in Woodward County.
Some damage from the strong winds was reported in Freedom, including highline poles
downed, windows blown out of a house, and a large tree downed onto a camper.

Severe thunderstorms in central and southern Oklahoma produced hail as large as nickels
and severe winds that resulted in 2 injuries.
A woman and her son were injured when a tree fell onto their car 2 miles northwest of Ada.
They were driving home when the incident occurred, and fortunately only suffered minor
injuries from the broken glass.
In northeastern Pauls Valley in Garvin County, severe thunderstorm winds also blew a 6-
foot pecan tree down through the roof of a home and felled several smaller trees as well.
In Pontotoc County numerous shingles were blown away and part of a roof collapsed 3 miles
northwest of Ada due to the severe winds. One mile southwest of Byng (also in Pontotoc
County) a small tree was downed by winds estimated at 65 mph.
Severe thunderstorm wind speeds up to 72 mph were reported 1 mile northeast of Rush
Springs in Grady County. Nickel-sized hail was reported near Cement in Caddo County and
in Ada in Pontotoc County.

Thunderstorms developed in the late afternoon of the 21st and continued throughout the
evening and into the early morning hours of the 22nd. Hail as large as quarters was
reported 4 miles northwest of Watonga in Blaine County and in Jefferson in Grant County.
The strongest reported wind speeds were estimated at 80 mph in Cleo Springs in Major
County.
Severe thunderstorm winds broke a 3-inch fence post off at the ground 2 miles south of
Greenfield in Blaine County. Severe winds also caused extensive tree and limb damage 3
miles east of Eakly in Caddo County and downed 3-inch limbs 24 miles north-northwest of
Mooreland in Woodward County. Four miles south of Freedom, also in Woodward County, winds
estimated at 70 mph blew a large tree down across Highway 50.
In Woods County limbs up to 8 inches were downed in Little Sahara State Park 3 miles south
of Waynoka, and many limbs up to 4 inches were downed and a windmill was severely damaged
14 miles southeast of Waynoka. Severe thunderstorm winds also derailed 20 railroad cars
along a 1 mile stretch of track 5 miles northeast of Waynoka.
Lightning from the thunderstorms ignited 2 fires in Woods County. One mile northeast of
Alva lightning struck a brick home, and the resulting fire destroyed the 2 cars that were
in the garage and almost completely destroyed the house. Lightning also struck and
damaged a tank battery 2 miles southeast of Alva.
In Payne County in Stillwater, lightning also struck and set fire to a house, resulting in
$30,000 damage.

Severe thunderstorm winds were estimated at 70 mph in Carnegie in Caddo County. Limbs up
to 3 inches were downed by severe thunderstorm winds 15 miles south of Tangier in Woodward
County, 2-inch limbs were downed in Weatherford in Custer County, and in Grady County
widespread limbs up to 2 inches were downed and the power was out 3 miles west of
Chickasha.
In Cleveland County, 10-inch limbs were downed in Noble, and winds estimated at 60 mph
blew down construction signs and 2-inch limbs in Norman. In McClain County 1 mile west of
Newcastle an 8-inch tree-top was snapped by severe thunderstorm winds.

Isolated thunderstorms developed in northwest Oklahoma during early evening on the 23rd.
Within a few hours a second area of numerous thunderstorms began to develop rapidly in
southwest Oklahoma. The thunderstorms spread into central portions of the state during
the evening and many evolved into severe straight-line wind producing thunderstorms with
distinctive bow-echo radar signatures. In summary, wind gusts to 97 mph, hail up to 3-
inch diameter, and 3 tornados were reported during this event.
By far the most damaging storm of the night occurred in Oklahoma County as a severe
thunderstorm with straight-line winds up to 97 mph moved through central Oklahoma and the
Oklahoma City metro area between 2300 and midnight CST on the 23rd (midnight to 1 am CDT
on the 24th).
As the storm approached western sections of the metro area, it began to cause significant
damage in Canadian County. In El Reno a metal awning was destroyed, and in Yukon trees
were downed, one onto a mobile home. The courthouse in Yukon suffered major roof damage
which resulted in flooding of the offices inside. In Mustang winds were measured at 82 to
92 mph. Two carports were destroyed, light poles were downed, and major tree and fence
damage occurred.
When the storm reached western Oklahoma County, wind speeds approached 100 mph. At the
Weather Service Office at Will Rogers Airport in southwest Oklahoma City, winds were
sustained at 36 to 70 mph from 2324CST to 2353CST. Gusts ranged from 58 to 96 mph, with a
peak of 96 mph at 2339CST. Damage throughout the county was extensive, with the heaviest
damage in southern and western Oklahoma City. Dollar estimates of damage alone (not
including clean-up costs or lost revenue) topped 6.5 million dollars. Cleanup costs
likely added an additional 2 million dollars to the total.
One-fifth of the city's traffic signals were damaged, about 100 in all; and an estimated
175,000 homes lost power in the Oklahoma City metro area, many for several days. Up to
20,000 people were still without electricity the evening of the 26th, and electrical
service was not completely restored until the 28th, 5 days after the storm. One employee
of the electric company was killed while working on a high voltage line.
At the Will Rogers Airport, several windows were knocked out of the observation tower and
the Weather Service Office at 2328CST. Windows were also broken out of numerous cars.
At Wiley Post Airport 8 hangars sustained significant roof damage, for an estimated $1
million damage. An airplane was also turned 45 degrees from its original position. A
building was destroyed near the 2000 block of Airport Road.
Wind speeds at Tinker Air Force Base in Del City (a southeastern suburb of Oklahoma City)
reached 97 mph, the highest measured wind speed of the event. Tinker AFB suffered
extensive damage to windows, roofs, and equipment stored in hangars. Nearby Rose State
College also suffered significant roof and window damage valued at $10,000.
The Oklahoma State Fairgrounds sustained over almost $1 million damage to signs and
buildings. The greatest single cost was the bubble roof of the International Trade Center
which collapsed during the storm. Replacement of the roof and repair of the building cost
$746,000.
A paper warehouse was heavily damaged when an outside concrete-block wall collapsed due to
the severe winds. Damage to the warehouse and contents was estimated at $1 million.
University Hospital in downtown Oklahoma City received $150,000 damage: $70,000 to a Care-
flight helicopter and $80,000 to the windows and roof of the hospital itself.
The roof collapsed on 4 units of the Western Oaks Apartments at 7416 NW 23rd St, and a
brick wall was blown down at 23rd and Vandament. Part of the roof of a Post Office
collapsed at SW 57th and Agnew. A mobile home on the 5200 block of Peniel was blown onto
its side, a mobile home on the 9000 block of NW 10th lost half of its roof, and a house
lost 1/4 of its roof at 9717 Westlake.
Two homes at SW 59th and May and a Pizza Hut at SW 82nd and Pennsylvania suffered
significant roof damage. At SW 74th and Pennsylvania, a greenhouse was destroyed and gas
pumps were overturned. Roof and gas pump damage was also reported at SW 74th and May.
In Moore in northern Cleveland County, the east face of Westmoore High School was stripped
away by the severe thunderstorm winds. Damage was estimated at $25,000. Many homes in
Moore suffered roof and structural damage, including parts of walls blown off the second
story of one house. Ten blocks of power poles were downed along Santa Fe south of 4th on
the Moore/Oklahoma City line.
Sign and tree damage throughout Oklahoma and northern Cleveland Counties was too extensive
to list. Over 200 trees were twisted or uprooted at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds alone.
Only 2 known injuries were attributed to the storm as it moved through the metro area. An
elderly couple driving on Santa Fe south of 4th Street in Moore (Cleveland County) was
injured by a falling utility pole. Both were treated and released by a local hospital.
Elsewhere in central Oklahoma, severe thunderstorm winds in Pottawatomie County downed 2-
inch limbs in Pink and felled numerous trees and power lines in Tecumseh. In Shawnee, also
in Pottawatomie County, winds estimated at 70 mph downed many limbs up to 3 inches.
Severe thunderstorm winds estimated at 80 mph in northern Hennessey in Kingfisher County
uprooted or snapped numerous 14 to 20-inch trees and power lines. Several residential and
business roofs were damaged or removed. Glass windows and doors were broken throughout
town. The Co-op also sustained damage to a nurse tank when a power pole fell on it. One
large tree fell onto a mobile home, and another trailer house was blown over. One woman
was injured when part of the wall of her apartment complex caved in.
Severe thunderstorm winds downed 2-inch limbs 5 miles west of Meeker and in Prague in
Lincoln County. In Cleveland County 3 miles south of Stella, an 18-inch tree was downed,
and numerous trees and limbs were downed in Norman. In Payne County large limbs and 3
trees were downed in Stillwater, and limbs up to 4 inches were snapped in Atwood in Hughes
County. In Seminole County 1500 residents of Seminole lost power due to trees blown over
onto power lines.
In northern Oklahoma severe thunderstorm winds estimated at 70 mph removed shingles and
downed 2-inch limbs 5 miles south of Wakita in Grant County. The roof and walls were
blown out of a large metal machine shed 15 miles west of Medford in Grant County.
In Harper County, 2-inch limbs were downed in Buffalo and 1-foot limbs were downed in
Laverne. One-foot tree limbs were also downed in Arnett in Ellis County. In Woodward
County numerous 6-inch limbs were downed and the roof of a nursing home was partially
blown off in Mooreland. In Woodward large trees were downed by winds clocked as high as
65 mph at the Woodward Airport. In Major County large trees and limbs were downed in
Fairview, and in Noble County trees were uprooted and limbs were snapped in Perry and
Morrison.
In western Oklahoma 1-foot tree limbs were downed in Sayre in Beckham County. In Washita
County utility poles were downed and limbs and debris literally covered the streets of
Colony. In Custer County in Fay 2-inch limbs were downed.
In Hydro on the Blaine/Caddo County line, 8 utility poles were downed, trees were split, a
peanut truck was overturned, the roof was blown off a shed, and a barn was destroyed.
Elsewhere in Blaine County, 2-inch tree limbs were downed in Watonga and 6 miles south of
Canton. In Okeene winds estimated at 80 mph caused significant damage. A camper was
thrown on its side and severely damaged, a church steeple was toppled, the roof was blown
off a house, a large tree was uprooted, a carport was destroyed, and 16 utility poles were
broken.
Severe thunderstorm winds were also reported in southern Oklahoma. In Cotton County
windows were blown out of a toll booth on I-44 5 miles west of Walters, and a 2-foot tree
was uprooted and 15 utility poles were downed in Devol.
In Tillman County in Frederick the roof was blown off a vacant motel, windows were blown
out of storefronts, and signs were blown down. In the immediate vicinity of Frederick a
mobile home was destroyed, the roof was blown off a barn, trees were uprooted, and more
than 70 utility poles were downed including 50 that were snapped off at the ground. At the
Frederick Airport 2 airplanes and 2 hangars suffered an estimated $30,000 damage.
Elsewhere in Tillman County, 2-inch limbs were downed in Grandfield.
In Comanche County 23 utility poles were blown down in Indiahoma and Chattanooga, and in
Kiowa County 21 poles were downed in Snyder. Five miles west of Hobart in Kiowa County a
barn was destroyed by the strong winds. Trees, signs, power lines, and light poles were
blown down in Pauls Valley in Garvin County and in Davis in Murray County.
Severe thunderstorm winds downed limbs up to 4 inches in Tupelo in Coal County, and a 1-
foot tree limb was blown down onto a road 1 mile west of Wardville in Atoka County.
The 3 tornados occurred from a single storm, mainly in Cotton County, around mid-evening
on the 23rd. The first tornado was spotted on the Cotton/Comanche County line 10 miles
north-northwest of Cookietown (which is 8 miles southeast of Faxon). The tornado was on
the ground for 2 minutes and moved little during that time.
The second tornado occurred 6 miles north-northwest of Cookietown and lasted for 1 minute.
The third tornado was spotted 7 miles south of Walters. None of the tornados resulted in
damage and all 3 were rated as F0.
Three-inch hail also fell with this same storm in Cotton County 5 miles west of Walters on
I-44.
Lightning struck and ignited the roof of a house in Weatherford in Custer County. Damage
was estimated at $28,000. In Comanche County lightning struck and set fire to a house in
Lawton at 2340CST, resulting in $45,000 damage. A second house in Lawton was struck by
lightning from a later storm (at 0100CST on the 24th), resulting in $10,000 damage. In
Duncan in Stephens County lightning struck, ignited, and completely destroyed a house and
its contents valued at $92,000.

Severe thunderstorms moved across northern Oklahoma during the evening of the 25th and
continued into central Oklahoma into the early morning hours of the 26th.
Hail as large as quarters was reported in Lookout in Woods County. Severe thunderstorm
winds were measured at 63 mph at the Oklahoma Mesonet site 3 miles southeast of
Breckenridge in Garfield County.
Severe thunderstorm winds up to 60 mph blew down a 6-inch tree 2 miles northwest of Gibbon
in Grant County. In Ponca City in Kay County, winds blew a metal storage shed into the
road and felled a tree onto a street. In Noble County in Perry a 2-foot tree was felled,
and in Oklahoma County in Edmond power lines were downed, knocking out power to 2000
people. In Hughes County in Holdenville, trees and roofs were damaged by severe winds and
at least 1 county road was blocked by a fallen tree.
Lightning from the thunderstorms struck a chimney in Ponca City in Kay County, causing it
to explode. No fire was started, and the damage was estimated at $4000. In Payne County
in Stillwater lightning struck and ignited a wood frame home, resulting in $20,000 damage.
In Coyle in Logan County lightning struck and set fire to a church steeple. The church,
built in 1902, burned to the ground.

Severe thunderstorms produced damaging winds across Wichita and northern Clay Counties
during the evening of the 20th. At Sheppard AFB (SPS) in Wichita County, wind gusts
reached as high as 106 mph, and a single-engine aircraft that had been tied down was
flipped over. Almost one hour later, wind speeds in Wichita Falls were measured at 61 to
78 mph at a local TV station. Damage in Wichita Falls from the evening's storms included
8" branches down, outbuildings damaged, shingles blown off houses, a tree felled onto a
car, and heavy metal awnings blown over.
In Clay County in Charlie, winds up to 65 mph knocked out power to Charlie and Dean.

Oklahoma. State Highway 51 was under 1.5 feet of water and closed from Okeene to US 51A in
Blaine County. One mile northwest of Watonga (also in Blaine County), high water covered SH
51A.
US Highway 62 was covered by water 4 miles east of Hollis in Harmon County and was closed in
Duke in Jackson County with 1 foot of water over the road. Highway 5 in Harmon County was also
closed due to flash flooding 5 miles south of Gould. In Kiowa County, high water was reported
on SH 19 and US 183 1 mile north of Roosevelt. Three miles north of Snyder high water also

Morning thunderstorms across northern and western Oklahoma resulted in several reports of flash
flooding. A county road was under water 1 mile southwest of Burns Flat in Washita County, and
in Garfield County 2.5 feet of water covered a county-road bridge near Nash.
In Alfalfa County, water flooded numerous streets in Cherokee and covered SH 11 east of town.
In Jet US 64 was closed.
In Grant County only 1 lane of US 81 remained open 2 miles south of Jefferson. Highway 11 was
closed both east and west of Medford and SH 132 was closed from Nash north to the Kansas border
due to high water.
After several consecutive days of rain and thunderstorms, flash flooding became a river flood
event across much of northern Oklahoma and parts of western North Texas. The wet weather
pattern was driven largely by the remnants of Tropical Storm Dean. Dean came on shore on the
Texas Gulf Coast the evening of July 31st. Heavy rains followed across much of Texas and
Oklahoma through the next week. Rainfall amounts of 8 to 12 inches were common, with some
areas reporting as much as 16 inches of rain in the 6 day period from July 31st through August
5th.
River flooding in north-central Oklahoma was particularly severe. The Salt Fork of the
Arkansas River crested over 10 feet above flood stage in some locations. In Grant County, over
50 people were evacuated from flooded homes in the town of Jefferson. Flood waters climbed as
high as 3 feet into some homes. The town of Pond Creek lacked drinking water for several days
after the pump house was flooded. An observer in Hawley (a small community about 6 miles north
of Nash) reported 16 inches of rain from August 1st through 3rd.
Just downstream in Kay County, the Salt Fork crested at 27.65 feet, over 10 feet above flood
stage, at 0200CST Saturday August 5th. Interstate 35 was closed just west of Tonkawa from
1930CST on the 4th to 1000CST on the 5th as the river overflowed its banks. At the river's
crest, over 2.5 feet of water covered the interstate. At least 12 rural homes in Kay County
received water damage, including one farm 6 miles west of Tonkawa that measured 46 inches of
water in the house. At least 63 homes suffered major flood damage in Grant and Kay Counties
combined.
In Woods County the swollen Salt Fork left 6 inches of water in a car showroom in Alva.
In Washita County one man drowned when his car was washed off the spillway of Clinton Lake
(about 3 miles east of Canute) and into Monument Creek. The two passengers were able to swim
to safety.
In Alfalfa County, over 2 feet of water flooded a car dealer in Cherokee and 5 homes were
flooded by an overflowing Cottonwood Canyon.
In Major County, 40 miles of roads were closed and 100 additional miles required caution due to
flooding. Two bridges were washed away, including a 120-foot bridge over Eagle Chief Creek 2
miles north of Cleo Springs. Over 50 drainage pipes throughout the county were also washed
out. Water also flooded several businesses in Fairview.
In Blaine County, flooding of the North Canadian River resulted in heavy damage in Longdale.
One church was completely destroyed and 15 homes received flood damage. The town hall and at
least one business had 3 inches of water inside. Two barns in Cleveland County were washed
away by the Canadian River.
In Kingfisher County, Kingfisher Creek flooded in Dover, and in Jackson County several county
roads were washed out by flooded creeks.

Morning thunderstorms resulted in flash flooding across western sections of north Texas and 1
flash flood death.
The death occurred in Hardeman County after a small car (containing 2 adults and 2 children)
drove into a flooded portion of US Highway 287 2 miles east of Chillicothe. The car apparently
stalled and the 2 adult occupants got out of the car and pushed it to the side of the road. By
this time the water was about 2 feet deep. Large trucks continued driving rapidly through the
high water and caused waves which pushed the car off the road and into a nearby ditch. Each
adult pulled one child from the car. The adult carrying the two-year-old child lost his

from Vernon to Crowell in Foard County due to flash flooding of the roadway.

Ahead of the cold front, severe thunderstorms developed over southeast Oklahoma. A severe
thunderstorm over Pushmataha county produced 3/4-inch hail 8 miles east of Moyers. Behind the cold
front, strong gradient winds not associated with severe thunderstorms produced damaging winds over
southwest oklahoma. In Altus, strong gradient winds not associated with a severe thunderstorm
caused $30,000 in roof damage at a Super 10 Motel.

tore a roof off of a former Texaco gas station at the intersection of Hwy. 82 and Hwy. 148.

Snow accumulations of four to eight inches occurred across northwest, north central and central
Oklahoma during the afternoon and evening of the 19th. Eight inches of snow fell at Freedom, in
northwest Oklahoma. Six inches of snow accumulated at Woodward and Laverne. Five inches of snow
fell at Ponca City, Enid and Midwest City, and four inches of snow fell in the Oklahoma City
metropolitan area. Many other locations across central and western Oklahoma had one to three inches
of snow. Slick and icy roads caused numerous traffic accidents. Around seventy-five accidents
occurred in the Oklahoma City metro area between 4pm and 7pm on the 19th, with around 60 accidents
across the rest of central and western Oklahoma from the afternoon of the 19th to the morning of
the 20th.
