Six basic steps for properly measuring snow. Accurate and timely snowfall measurements are extremely important to your local National Weather Service office, your community, local media, and many others. Here are the six steps you need to know for measuring snow... 1. Supplies. You need a ruler or yard stick, a 24 inch by 24 inch white board, and flag. 2. Planning. Find an open area awary from tall objects, but sheltered from the wind. 3. Set-up. Set up before the snow begins. Put your board our and mark it with the flag. 4. Measuring Snow. Record your total to the nearest tenth of an inch. Wipe the board off after measuring. Measure once daily at the same time, after measuring place the board on top of the snow. 5. When Snow Stops. Measure as soon as the snow stops to avoid lower totals due to melting, settling, and drifting. 6. Reporting. Send us your reports on weather.gov and social media! For more information, go to our Facebook and Twitter pages or listen to NOAA Weather Radio.
Extreme Cold WARNING is in effect for the entire area through Wednesday morning. Wind chills will drop into the teens tonight with some areas dropping into the single digits by Wednesday morning. Wind chills remain below freezing for much of the timeframe from tonight through mid-day Wednesday. Many locations may not see temperatures rise above freezing on Tuesday as the snow moves into the area. Temperatures on Wednesday may briefly rise above freezing. BE PREPARED. Protect People, Pets, Pipes, and Plants from cold weather. For people - minimize time outdoors; prepared for power outages; and check on elderly and other vulnerable people to make sure they are okay. For pets - keep your pets warm, dry, and indoors as much as possible; ensure their food and water does not freeze; limit outside time and keep them bundled up. For pipes - insulate pipes if possible; open up sink cabinets to expose pipes to heated air; disconnect hoses and turn off water to sprinklers. For plants - know their temperature thresholds and cover them before the cold weather sets in to help retain some heat. BE PREPARED!
