A Red Flag Warning is in effect today for high fire danger that exists for northeast and east central NM due to strong winds and low humidity values. Avoid open flames, properly discard cigarettes and keep vehicles off dry grass.
The high fire danger continues Friday, expanding to all of the southeastern half of the state where a Fire Weather Watch has been issued due to strong winds and very low humidity. Rapid fire spread will be possible from any new spark.
Strong southwesterly winds return today, gusting up to 45 mph. These winds strengthen and expand over the state Friday with gusts up to 55 mph. The strongest winds each day will be across eastern NM. These winds alongside very low humidity will threaten rapid fire spread from any new fires.
A widespread freeze is forecast over the northwestern half of NM Friday night into Saturday morning. Take precautions to protect sensitive plants that have undergone an early season bloom due to March's record heatwave.
The cold Friday night into Saturday will threaten a hard freeze over much of the western and northern thirds of the state where lows are forecast to plummet into the 10s and 20s. A Freeze Watch is in effect for these areas where significant damage to sensitive plans and irrigation that has gotten an early start to the growing season due to March's record heatwave.
