Heavy Rainfall and Severe Thunderstorm Threats for the Plains and Southeast

A frontal boundary extending from the western High Plains to the Southeast will focus additional showers and thunderstorms this weekend. Some of these storms may become severe, alongside frequent lightning, and isolated instances of flash flooding. Hot & Dry Weather Returns
July Climate Review
Strong to severe storms will continue through the early morning hours on Sunday. These storms will be capable of all hazards, but the primary concern will be damaging wind and torrential rainfall that could lead to some localized flooding. Hail in the 1-1.75" range will be possible with a very low chance at a spin up tornado. We'll be looking closely at what the storms overnight do to the atmosphere. It's possible that the Panhandles may not have enough time to recover for another round of storms on Sunday afternoon.

Active weather looks to wane after Sunday as high pressure begins to build back over the Panhandles. This system will help us dry out for most of the week with temperatures looking to heat up as well. At this time, potential is present to see most locations nearing or over the triple digit mark by Wednesday and possibly stay there into the weekend.

July saw the Panhandles experience another month that was cooler and wetter than normal. Nearly all locations were almost a full degree colder than the climatological normal, with both Amarillo and Dalhart just missing the 100-degree mark. However, Amarillo and Borger once again exceeded expectations for precipitation, with Amarillo receiving nearly an extra inch of rainfall for the month.
