Tropical Depression in the Gulf; Severe Thunderstorms Monday

Tropical Depression Two is expected to gradually strengthen and could bring tropical storm conditions to the Florida Panhandle beginning late Monday. Areas of flash flooding will be possible through Thursday along the eastern and central Gulf Coast. An area of low pressure slowly moved westward across the Gulf Coast from 11-14 August 2016. Abundant tropical moisture and warm temperatures through much of the lower atmosphere resulted in an environment favorable for very heavy rainfall in vicinity of the low. Thunderstorm activity increased on 12 and 13 August and these thunderstorms moved repeatedly over portions of south-central Louisiana and southwest Mississippi. Rainfall totals ranged from 10 to over 20 inches in portions of the area. The resultant flash flooding and river flooding impacted numerous communities and tens of thousands of people along the Gulf Coast.
