A Pacific storm is bringing areas of low elevation rain, moderate to heavy mountain snow, and high winds to the Northwest. Student Volunteer Program
The National Weather Service Jackson, MS student volunteer program provides an opportunity for students of meteorology and related fields (emergency management, hydrology, GIS, information technology, social science) to receive experience working with professionals in our office. The fall/spring session will again be virtual to ensure opportunities for remote participants. Volunteer students will have the opportunity to learn about duties performed by our staff and complete related projects and research. Students who decide to seek a career with the National Weather Service will receive mentorship and support from NWS employees. Volunteer students will have the opportunity to conduct practice weather briefings, assist with severe weather verification, and to complete a project with mentorship from our employees.
The upcoming program will be virtual and will last from mid-September through April with breaks in between for the holidays. Sessions will be at 7 PM CT on Tuesdays. Opportunities during this session will include:
Who can apply?
College students of meteorology and related fields (emergency management, hydrology, GIS, information technology, social science). High school students who show strong interest may also be allowed to volunteer.
Is this a paid internship?
National Weather Service student volunteers are unpaid. This program provides an opportunity to receive valuable work experience, receive guidance from trained professionals, and establish contacts within our agency. The National Weather Service does offer a limited number of paid internship positions through the Pathways program. While prior volunteer experience is not required to apply for a Pathways position, it is strongly recommended.
