ALTHOUGH A BRIEF F0 TORNADO WAS FOUND NEAR THE HINDS/MADISON COUNTY LINE...THE MAIN TORNADO ASSOCIATED WITH THIS STORM TOUCHED DOWN ABOUT 6 MILES WEST OF THE CITY OF MADISON. THE TORNADO STRUCK THE FAIRFIELD SUBDIVISION AT ABOUT 525 AM BASED ON EYEWITNESS REPORTS AND ANALYSIS OF RADAR DATA. SEVERAL HOMES WERE DESTROYED DOWN TO THE FOUNDATION IN THIS SUBDIVISION... AND DOZENS OF OTHERS SUFFERED MAJOR DAMAGE. THE TORNADO THEN TRAVELED NORTHEAST...SEVERELY DAMAGING MANY HOMES AS IT MOVED NEAR THE COMMUNITY OF GLUCKSTADT. THE TORNADO THEN CROSSED INTERSTATE 55 BEFORE DISSIPATING OVER CENTRAL MADISON COUNTY AT ABOUT 545 AM. THIS TORNADO HAD A PATH LENGTH OF 12 MILES AND A MAXIMUM WIDTH OF ONE-HALF MILE. THE DAMAGE WAS RATED AS F4 ON THE FUJITA SCALE. |
