Lake-effect Snow and Whiteout Conditions in the Great Lakes Region; Below-average Temperatures in the East

Heavy lake-effect and lake-enhanced snow will persist downwind of the Great Lakes and produce some whiteout conditions that could cause difficult travel conditions. A coastal low will produce moderate to heavy snow over parts of southern and eastern New England into the afternoon.   LaFayette WI (Monroe County) tornado - F0

On Friday, September 7, 2001, a line of thunderstorms moved into western Monroe County and produced a small tornado touchdown between Cataract and Sparta, WI. The tornado, rated F-0 on the Fujita Scale, tracked through a grove of trees about 3 miles southeast of Cataract and hit a mobile home along County Road Q.

The mobile home was demolished, injuring a woman who was inside at the time the storm struck. The mobile home was not tied down and sitting on blocks. Debris was thrown into nearby trees and down wind at least a quarter-mile. Time of the tornado was approx. 630 pm.

Damage from thunderstorms was also reported in the La Crosse, WI area and on the northwest side of Necedah, WI (Juneau County).
