Storm Impacting the Northwest U.S.; Fire Weather Conditions in Southern California; Severe Weather in the South

A Pacific storm is bringing areas of low elevation rain, moderate to heavy mountain snow, and high winds to the Northwest. Strong Santa Ana winds and very dry conditions are producing elevated to critical fire weather conditions in southern California. Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are possible through early Wednesday morning across parts of northeast Texas into western Tennessee. Read More >

Overview

A potent, early spring storm brought a mixture of weather conditions to the region March 23rd and 24th, including rain, sleet, freezing rain, thunderstorms, and heavy snow.

There was some initial snow, rain, and sleet during the day on March 23rd, but later that evening, snow became heavy over southeast Minnesota into north central Wisconsin.  8 to 13 inches of snow fell in that area by the following morning.

In addition, thunderstorms and freezing rain showers brought a coating of ice to mainly northeast Iowa into southwest Wisconsin where ice and sleet accumulated up to a 1/2 inch in some places. There were branches and power lines down in some communities leading to power outages.

Stiff northeast winds turned northwest as the storm moved through leading to some drifting as well.
