Storm Impacting the Northwest U.S.; Fire Weather Conditions in Southern California; Severe Weather in the South

A Pacific storm is bringing areas of low elevation rain, moderate to heavy mountain snow, and high winds to the Northwest. Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are possible through early Wednesday morning across parts of northeast Texas into western Tennessee. Read More >

March 13, 2006 Snow Totals and Wind Gusts

A strong late winter storm system moved northeast out of Kansas and into the lower Great Lakes region on the 13th of March. This strong system was responsible for a large severe weather outbreak across the central Mississippi River Valley where several tornadoes touchdowned. Farther north in the upper Midwest, the system initially brought rain to the region, but as temperatures began to cool, sleet and snow occurred. By the early morning hours of the 13th all the precipitation had changed over to snow. Bands of heavy snow developed across central and eastern Minnesota into northern Wisconsin. The Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area was especially hard hit with snowfall amounts of 12 to 18 inches. Locations around the local region that received snow, saw amounts range from just a trace up to 6-7 inches. The highest total in the local area was 6.8 inches at Mantorville, Minnesota with several other locations across southeast Minnesota receiving 6 inches. Once the area of low pressure moved past the region, the winds turned around to the northwest and became quite strong. Sustained speeds of 20 to 35 mph were common during the day with gusts of 40 to 50 mph. The winds began to calm down in the late afternoon and evening hours as the area of low pressure moved farther away from the region. The highest wind gusts reported were 47 mph at Charles City, Iowa and 46 at Arlington, Iowa.
