Storm Impacting the Northwest U.S.; Fire Weather Conditions in Southern California; Severe Weather in the South

A Pacific storm is bringing areas of low elevation rain, moderate to heavy mountain snow, and high winds to the Northwest. Strong Santa Ana winds and very dry conditions are producing elevated to critical fire weather conditions in southern California. During June 2022, temperature anomalies ranged from near-normal to 3°F above-normal across the Upper Mississippi River Valley.  Monthly average temperatures ranged from 63.3°F at Medford, WI (COOP) to 71.9°F at La Crosse Regional Airport, WI (ASOS).  It was the 20th warmest June at Rochester, MN and tied for the 21st warmest June at La Crosse, WI (it was tied with 1894). The hottest temperature was 101°F near Theilman, MN (COOP) on June 21 and the coldest temperature was 35°F at Sparta Fort McCoy Airport on June 3. Rainfall anomalies ranged from 4” drier-than-normal to 3” wetter-than-normal across the Upper Mississippi River Valley. The wettest areas were in La Crosse and Monroe counties in west-central Wisconsin. It was the 7th wettest June at St. Ansgar, IA and the wettest since 2020 (7.35” – 6th wettest).  It was the 9th wettest June in Sparta, WI and the wettest since 2004 (9.84” - 3rd wettest). Record began in 1893. The driest areas were in Clayton County (IA) and Grant County (WI). Precipitation totals ranged from 2.07” at Boscobel Airport, WI (ASOS) to 8.44” at Sparta, WI (COOP). During the month, there were 32 severe weather warnings (23 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and 9 Tornado Warnings). This was slightly below the 1986-2022 average of 35 severe weather warnings. The greatest number of severe weather warnings in a June was 138 warnings (110 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and 28 Tornado Warnings) in 1998. There were 3 confirmed tornadoes in west-central and central Wisconsin (all during the afternoon of June 15). This was the most tornadoes in June since 2019 when there was 8 tornadoes. The most in a June was 12 tornadoes in 1964.
