A Pacific storm is bringing areas of low elevation rain, moderate to heavy mountain snow, and high winds to the Northwest. Strong Santa Ana winds and very dry conditions are producing elevated to critical fire weather conditions in southern California. Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are possible through early Wednesday morning across parts of northeast Texas into western Tennessee. Read More >
From July 22nd through July 24th, a frontal boundary with tropical moisture pooled along it meandered across Iowa, northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin, and southern Minnesota. As low pressure systems moved along this front, multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms with heavy rainfall occurred. The first of these systems moved through during the morning of July 22nd, which produced widespread rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches. The next system and its associated round of showers and thunderstorms moved into the Upper Mississippi River Valley region during the afternoon of July 22nd and lingered through the morning of July 23rd. Between eight and ten inches of rain fell across southern Fayette and Clayton counties in northeast Iowa, and the southern third of Grant County in southwest Wisconsin. This caused some flash flooding in Oelwein (Fayette County) and Edgewood (Clayton County). The final system and round of precipitation moved through from the evening of July 23rd through the early morning hours of July 24th. This system produced another 2 to 4 inches of rain across the same areas which were hit hard from the previous round of heavy rain, resulting in additional flash flooding.
Below are images of precipitation totals during the July 22-24 time period, storm reports received from strong storms that moved across during the early morning hours of July 24th, and a table listing the 3 day precipitation totals.
