A Pacific storm is bringing areas of low elevation rain, moderate to heavy mountain snow, and high winds to the Northwest. Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are possible through early Wednesday morning across parts of northeast Texas into western Tennessee. Read More >

An area of low pressure formed along a stationary front over Oklahoma during the evening of the 25th. Extending north from the low into the Dakotas was a trough of low pressure. A trough of low pressure is similar to an area of low pressure, except it does not have a closed circulation associated with it. A large area of light to moderate snow develop along and ahead of the trough. By early morning on the 26th, the low had moved into Missouri with the trough extending north into Minnesota. Snow continued to fall ahead of the trough as far east as central Wisconsin. During the evening of the 26th, the low moved into Indiana, but the trough remained nearly stationary over eastern Minnesota. This allowed the light to moderate snow to occur for an extended time over eastern Minnesota, western Wisconsin and northeast Iowa. The snow tapered off to flurries during the morning of the 27th as the low moved into Ohio allowing the trough to shift east of the area. In the local area, a large area of snowfall exceeding three inches fell across southeast Minnesota, northeast Iowa into western Wisconsin. Snowfall totals exceeding six inches was common over southeast Minnesota into west central Wisconsin. The highest snowfall total reported was 8.7 inches at the Rochester, Minnesota airport and 8.4 inches at Stewartville, Minnesota.

Snow totals for January 26 and 27.
