A Pacific storm is bringing areas of low elevation rain, moderate to heavy mountain snow, and high winds to the Northwest. Strong Santa Ana winds and very dry conditions are producing elevated to critical fire weather conditions in southern California. Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are possible through early Wednesday morning across parts of northeast Texas into western Tennessee. Read More >
January 11-12, 2012 Snowfall
Snowfall Maps | Snowfall Reports |
After record warmth earlier in the week, a strong cold front moved through the region on Wednesday, January 11th dropping temperatures about 25 to 30 degrees in 48 hours. As precipitation moved into the area Wednesday evening (Jan.11th) it began to fall almost immediately in the form of snow with light accumulations (Trace to 3 inches) reported early Thursday morning (Jan.12th).
The relatively slow moving weather system continued to bring light snow to the region through most of Thursday (Jan.12th) as north to northwest winds increased leading to drifting of the relatively dry snow. Winds gusted between 30-40 mph at times that produced drifts in some areas of 2 to 4 feet high!
The snow continued into Thursday evening and gradually diminished to mainly flurries by the next day. This was a longer duration, dry snow fall event that had some minor impact on mainly travel.
