A Pacific storm is bringing areas of low elevation rain, moderate to heavy mountain snow, and high winds to the Northwest. Strong Santa Ana winds and very dry conditions are producing elevated to critical fire weather conditions in southern California. Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are possible through early Wednesday morning across parts of northeast Texas into western Tennessee. Read More >
February 7-8, 2001 Snow and Ice Totals
A cold front moved through the region on the 5th and 6th of February before stalling over the Ohio Valley later on the 6th. By the 7th of February, this front was returning north toward the region as a warm front and it would become stationary from eastern Wisconsin into northern Illinois to central Missouri. This would set the stage for a mixture of precipitation to occur as temperatures near the front were close to the freezing mark, while farther north, readings were in the 20s. Precipitation developed over the Midwest on the 7th ahead of an upper level disturbance. The precipitation was all snow over western Wisconsin into central Minnesota where some heavy snow fell with accumulations of 6 inches or more. Farther south over southwest Wisconsin into southeast Minnesota, the precipitation started out as snow, but only lasted for a few hours before changing over to freezing drizzle. Snowfall totals in this region were generally between 1 to 2 inches with only minor ice accumulation. Over extreme southern Wisconsin into northeast Iowa, air temperatures remained near freezing and most of the precipitation there fell as freezing rain with only a dusting of snow.
