Winter Storm of December 23-24, 2010

Snowfall Maps Radar Snowfall Reports

A winter storm system moved from the Northern Plains into the Upper Mississippi River Valley region on Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th of December.  Snow began falling across portions of northeast Iowa during the evening hours on Thursday then spread into southeast Minnesota and southwest Wisconsin as the night progressed.  Snow continued to fall through much of the day on Friday, however the majority of the accumlating snow had occurred through noon.  Significant amounts were able to accumulate by Friday morning (Christmas Eve), which prompted the Winter Weather Advisories to be upgraded to Winter Storm Warnings for portions of northeast Iowa.  The heaviest axis of snow fell south of a line from St Ansgar, IA to Elkader, IA where amounts were measured in excess of 6 inches.  There were locations that saw up to 11 inches fall by the time the snow moved out of the area by early evening on Friday.  North of where the heaviest snow fell, amounts of 3 to 6 inches were common, while locations into west central Wisconsin generally saw less than 3 inches.

There was very little wind accompanying this weather system, which kept blowing or drifting of the snow from being of any concern.
