April 7, 2003 Snow Totals
With below normal temperatures already in place across the area, the stage was set for another late season storm storm. A strong and slow moving upper level storm system moved out of Nebraska and into Iowa early on the 7th. A band of heavy snow formed during the early morning hours east of the low, across central Iowa, and move slowly north as the low also moved north. As the snow moved across northeast Iowa, northeast winds of 15 to 25 miles an hour produced near white out conditions as the snow fell at a rate of 2 inches an hour. The heavy snow band progressed into extreme southern Minnesota before becoming stationary as the upper level low stopped its northward movement. As the low moved slowly east across Iowa during the day, the snow quickly accumulated with totals of 9 to 11 inches common across southern Minnesota into the extreme corner of northeast Iowa and a small part of southwest Wisconsin. Dorchester, Iowa in northern Allamakee county had the highest total with 11 inches while Browndale, Minnesota in central Mower county piled up 10.5 inches.
