Regional Outbreaks of Severe Weather Through Early Next Week; Early Season Heat Wave across the South

Active spring pattern across the center of our nation with several episodes of severe weather and heavy rainfall expected into next week. The potential for very large hail, long track tornadoes, severe wind gusts, frequent cloud to ground lightning strikes and flash flooding are in the outlook. While today may be slightly cooler than yesterday, heat indices between 95 to 103 degrees are still likely increase the potential for heat stress and heat illnesses for those not taking precautions or spending extended periods outdoors.
Drier conditions are forecast today, before higher rain and storm chances return tonight and this weekend. This will maintain a threat for lightning, locally heavy downpours and gusty winds. Afternoon high temperatures and heat indices will remain elevated through the end of the week, leading to an uptick in the potential for heat stress impacts. Continue to monitor forecasts and be prepared to seek indoor shelter during thunder and lightning. Take heat precautions if working outdoors or during outdoor recreation.
We are monitoring the potential for localized heavy rainfall from tonight through Sunday as more widespread showers and thunderstorms are forecast. Many areas will see rainfall amounts of 1-2" during that time, however a few spots could end up with considerably more. Continue to monitor the forecast as we move into the weekend.
