Extreme Fire Weather Concerns; Severe Thunderstorms from the Plains to Mississippi Valley

Extremely critical fire weather concerns for portions of the southern High Plans as strong wind and very dry conditions could result in rapid spread of any fires. Meanwhile, severe thunderstorms are expected once again across areas of the Central and Southern Plains, then spreading in the Mississippi Valley regions on Monday. Thunderstorm potential increases Monday night ahead of an approaching cold front, mainly across far NE OK into NW AR. These storms will carry a very limited severe risk.
Coming off the warmest March on record, April 2026 was another very warm month. In fact, it was the warmest April on record for Ft. Smith, and 2nd warmest for Fayetteville. It was also a wetter than average month, especially at Tulsa, which picked up over 7 inches of rain.
The weekend starts off cool, but warmer and windier conditions arrive Sunday and continue into the first part of next week. Rain and storm chances will increase Monday night into Tuesday in association with a front and will linger into Wednesday.
