Record Heat for the Intermountain West and Northern Plains; Heavy Rainfall and Severe Weather Threats

Record setting heat is expected over the next several days from the Intermountain West through the northern Plains. Furthermore, fire weather concerns increase with dry and breezy conditions. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorm threats for the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys, central Appalachians and Southeast today. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected Friday afternoon and evening. Gusty winds and brief downpours are likely with the strongest storms.
Heat is expected to intensify into the weekend and persist into early next week. Afternoon heat indices of 100-110 F, locally higher early next week, are expected. Heat precautions should still be taken for any extended time outdoors.
Low storm chances into Friday. Dangerous heat returns this weekend and into next week.
