Areas of Severe Thunderstorms and Excessive Rainfall Today

Scattered severe thunderstorms capable of damaging wind gusts and some hail are expected this afternoon and evening from the Upper Ohio River Valley into the Northeast, and from the Appalachians into the Mid-Atlantic States. September 20-21 2013 Calcasieu Parish Flash Flood

The highest measured amounts observed were in the Moss Bluff/Gillis area of Calcasieu Parish. One gauge recorded a total of 15.67 inches. There were two gauges that reported 3 hour totals around 8.3 inches between 9 PM and Midnight on the 20th. According to statistics developed by the Hydrometeorological Design Studies Center, this type of rainfall has a probability of between 0.5% and 1% occurring in any given year!
