Storm Impacting the Northwest U.S.; Fire Weather Conditions in Southern California; Severe Weather in the South

A Pacific storm is bringing areas of low elevation rain, moderate to heavy mountain snow, and high winds to the Northwest. Strong Santa Ana winds and very dry conditions are producing elevated to critical fire weather conditions in southern California. For the next two to four weeks, please use the following phone numbers to access the automated phone system that provides weather information for Kauai and the Big Island:

The National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office in Honolulu was evaluating a new automated phone system to provide updated weather observations, forecasts, and warnings for Hawaii. However, it was necessary to change the Kauai and Big Island service to the new system early because of a computer security issue. We apologize for the disruption that this no-notice change has caused.

A similar change will be made for phone recordings for Oahu and Maui in the near future, though we do not anticipate any interruption to the existing phone numbers. Oahu and Maui residents who wish to evaluate the new system can do so as well. In these cases, the permanent number will continue to work and be available for comparison.

The new automated phone system is cloud-based and provides greater resiliency than the existing system. It includes a surge capability to handle more phone calls during significant weather events.
