Regional Outbreaks of Severe Weather Through Early Next Week; Early Season Heat Wave across the South

Active spring pattern across the center of our nation with several episodes of severe weather and heavy rainfall expected into next week. The potential for very large hail, long track tornadoes, severe wind gusts, frequent cloud to ground lightning strikes and flash flooding are in the outlook. During the early morning hours of Monday, July 7th, a brief tornado touchdown occurred just southwest of New Hampton, IA. The approx. tornado touchdown time was 4:06 a.m. and was ranked an F0 on the Fujita Scale. This was the first tornado of the 2003 season for NWS La Crosse.

Damage was confined to a few farm buildings and trees on one particular farm about 1-2 miles south-southwest of New Hampton, Iowa. Click here for a map of the touchdown.

A Tornado Warning was issued by the La Crosse National Weather Service for Chickasaw County at 3:48 a.m.  The warning was based on radar signatures and analysis of atmospheric conditions.
