National Weather Service United States Department of Commerce

Beginning June 8, 2026, the KICX weather radar near Cedar City, Utah, operated by NOAA’s National Weather Service, will be offline for approximately 12 days to undergo critical radome repairs. The radar is anticipated to return to full service by June 20, 2026.

Technicians will replace 10 of the 66 panels that comprise the radome—the protective fiberglass sphere covering the internal antenna. Inspections revealed that some panels were compromised by lightning strikes in recent years, leaving the radar vulnerable to structural damage and potential failure during high-wind events. This scheduled lifecycle maintenance is necessary to prevent an unscheduled, prolonged radar failure during inclement weather.

About the NEXRAD Network

The KICX radar is one of 159 operational radars within the Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) network. These WSR-88D radars detect precipitation location, intensity, and type, along with direction of movement.

The Radar Operations Center (ROC) in Norman, Oklahoma, provides lifecycle management and support for the entire NEXRAD network. The upcoming radome repair was scheduled in advance through coordination between the ROC and the local NWS Weather Forecast Office in Salt Lake City, taking into account local climatology and radome technician availability.
