Extreme Fire Weather Concerns; Severe Thunderstorms from the Plains to Mississippi Valley

Extremely critical fire weather concerns for portions of the southern High Plans as strong wind and very dry conditions could result in rapid spread of any fires. Meanwhile, severe thunderstorms are expected once again across areas of the Central and Southern Plains, then spreading in the Mississippi Valley regions on Monday. On December 28, 2011, Susan Spears of the National Weather Service, Midland/Odessa presented a Department of Commerce Honored Institution Award to Mr. Don Sitton of KPET radio in Lamesa, Texas for 50 years of service to the Cooperative Observer program.

Observations at KPET radio station started back on April 1, 1961, with Mr. Sitton taking over the observing responsibilities in 1989.

The National Weather Service office in Midland would like to thank KPET radio and Mr. Don Sitton for their many years of service. Congratulations on this great accomplishment and thank you for your support to the National Weather Service.
