Quick Event Summary

Much of the state experienced well above normal temperatures and below normal rainfall during September. There were some areas that saw quite the opposite with very heavy rainfall occurring across northeast Arkansas thanks to the influence of tropical systems Francine and Helene.

In the picture: A radar loop showing the progress of Francine.

A Labor Day cold front brought some scattered showers and thunderstorms to the state, but many areas missed out on appreciable rainfall. The front did bring areawide cooler temperatures and dry air. Below normal temperatures were observed several days in a row before Francince began to approach from the south. Warmer temperatures and an increase in moisture occurred on September 10th with increased cloud cover and some rain across southern Arkansas on the 11th.

The remnants of Francine moved north across Mississippi toward Memphis and northeast Arkansas on the 12th and 13th before diminishing into a remnant low pressure system. Heavy rain fell across much of northeast Arkansas with gusty winds noted as well. Rain was more widespread for a few days following with many areas seeing at least some light amounts.

Warm and dry conditions returned by mid to late month with temperatures climbing above 90 degrees in many areas from Sep 17-22. A few storms occurred across northern Arkansas during the evening of Sep 20th which brought some strong winds to locations near and to the E/SE of Mountain Home.
