Overview

A winter storm brought heavy snow and blizzard conditions to parts of Iowa and Minnesota on Monday, January 22nd, with a wintry mix and lower snow amounts to the east and west of there. Snow accumulations in excess of a foot were reported in some locations, while the combination of the snow and wind closed some highways and interstates across Iowa and Minnesota.

To the east of the main snow band, rain was the main precipitation type. Amounts from 0.5 to 1.5 inch were common. Falling on frozen ground, most of that ran into area rivers and streams, resulting in rises - eventually leading to some ice jams and flooding.
