A Pacific storm is bringing areas of low elevation rain, moderate to heavy mountain snow, and high winds to the Northwest. Strong Santa Ana winds and very dry conditions are producing elevated to critical fire weather conditions in southern California. A combination of periodic snowfalls and surges of bitter arctic air made for a harsh start to January 2015. Below normal temperatures, brisk winds, and passing weather systems led to nearly non-stop watches, warnings, and advisories for a week, including a blizzard during the afternoon and evening of January 8th. The coldest temperatures were on January 7th when Wind Chill Warnings were in effect for a large part of the region. Nearly all schools were closed that day.
