An area of low pressure moved out of the Rocky Mountains and into Oklahoma during the evening of the 4th. The low moved into Arkansas during the morning of the 5th and by the evening of the 5th was along the Indiana/Kentucky border. The low continued to move northeast into northern Ohio during the early morning hours of the 6th. Like recent storms that affected the upper Midwest, a trough of low pressure extended north from the low. A trough of low pressure is similar to an area of low pressure, except it does not have a closed circulation associated with it. The trough moved across Iowa and Minnesota during the afternoon and evening of the 5th and across Illinois and Wisconsin during the early morning of the 6th. Snow developed across Iowa during the morning of the 5th and lifted northeast across the state during the day ahead of the trough. The snow moved into southeast Minnesota and Wisconsin during the late afternoon of the 5th and continued into the 6th until the trough moved through the area. Around the local area, most locations received snowfall of two inches or more. Snowfall totals exceeding seven inches were common over extreme northeast Iowa into southwest and central Wisconsin. The highest snowfall totals reported were 9 inches at Edgewood, Iowa and 8.7 inches at Readstown, Wisconsin.
Snow totals for February 5 and 6.
