February 1-3, 2004 Snow Totals

An area of low pressure formed over Oklahoma during the morning of the 1st. Extending north from the low into Iowa and Minnesota was a trough of low pressure. A trough of low pressure is similar to an area of low pressure, except it does not have a closed circulation associated with it. A large area of light to moderate snow develop along and ahead of the trough and slowly moved into eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin during the afternoon and evening of the 1st. By the morning of the 2nd, the low had moved into southern Missouri with the trough extending north through Iowa, southeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. Snow continued to fall along and ahead of the trough as far east as central Wisconsin. During the early morning hours of the 3rd, the low moved into northeast Illinois with the trough pushing into eastern Wisconsin. As both the low and the trough moved east of the area, the snow gradually tapered off to flurries before ending. In the local area, most locations received snowfall that exceeded three inches. Snowfall totals exceeding six inches were common over north central Iowa, southeast Minnesota into west central and north central Wisconsin. A stripe of accumulations of a foot occurred over southeast Minnesota into west central Wisconsin. The highest snowfall total reported was 12.5 inches at Oronoco and Stewartville, Minnesota and 12.0 inches at Wabasha, Minnesota.

Snow totals for February 1 through 3.
