Bitterly cold temps return tonight, particularly for the eastern UP and interior northern Lower Michigan, with wind chills dropping below -15F tonight. It could be even colder Thursday night than tonight, with cold temperatures and wind chills becoming more widespread. Be sure to take precautions ahead of time…for yourself, elderly neighbors and family, and pets/livestock.
Lake effect snow continues today, with an additional 1-4 inches through tonight, though locally higher totals are possible for areas near and north of Tahquamenon Falls. Gusty winds will lead to blowing snow today; W winds early in the day could have impacts to the US-2 corridor west of St. Ignace again, before winds turn more N/NW and diminish through the afternoon/evening from north to south.
Very cold temperatures the past several days has promoted ice growth on rivers. This could lead to ice jams and potential flooding. Pay attention to river levels by going to weather.gov and clicking on Northern Michigan, then click on Rivers and Lakes, and select your gauge of interest. Report ice jams and subsequent flooding if you see any!
