Lake-effect Snow and Whiteout Conditions in the Great Lakes Region; Below-average Temperatures in the East

Heavy lake-effect and lake-enhanced snow will persist downwind of the Great Lakes and produce some whiteout conditions that could cause difficult travel conditions. A coastal low will produce moderate to heavy snow over parts of southern and eastern New England into the afternoon. A band of heavier snow is setting up west to east in far southern Wisconsin, including Janesville. This band is not expected to hit Madison or Milwaukee. A quick 1 to 2 inches is expected with locally higher amounts possible. The Winter Weather Advisory was expanded to include the southern tier of WI counties and is in effect until 11 PM. Expect travel impacts for the evening commute.
Snow overspreading southern Wisconsin this evening will exit from west to east through midnight. Gusty west winds up to 35 mph will peak mid-evening through the middle of tonight, with blowing and drifting possible.
Blustery westerly winds and temperatures falling into the teens below zero will create dangerous wind chill values Thursday night through Friday. An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect from Midnight Thursday night (12 AM Fri) through 1 PM Friday for wind chill values in the -30 to -40F range. Friday afternoon and night will continue to be cold, but with less wind.
