Locally Heavy Rainfall for the Carolinas; Thunderstorms and Fire Weather Concerns for Intermountain West

Heavy rainfall from scattered thunderstorms is expected across the Southwest, Intermountain West, and Plains. Isolated dry thunderstorms may initiate additional fires across the west. The coastal Carolinas may experience flash floods in the coming days due to repeated thunderstorms. The Milwaukee/Sullivan National Weather Service office provides an opportunity for college students to acquire real-world experience in a forecast office during the summer. Students typically work at least one day per week during the summertime for a 4 to 8 hour day. The volunteer program allows the student to become familiar with the operations of the National Weather Service. Students will work closely with the Science & Operations Officer, Warning Coordination Meteorologist, and Hydrologist on various projects. During active severe weather days, an effort is made to include the student as much as possible in our operations. A typical day at the office will be split between job shadowing the daily duties of the forecast team and working on a project which will be presented to the office at the end of the volunteer term.

This opportunity is open to all graduate and undergraduate students. Due to the number of interested students, an application process is used to select students for the program. Students do not need to be from southern Wisconsin to volunteer at our office. Any student who will be in the area and is able to commute to Sullivan about once a week is welcome to apply.
