At the start of the month, temperatures started out near normal. After September 5th, a cold front brought cooler temperatures for a few days. Portions of northern and western Arkansas fell into the 40s during the morning hours of September 7-9. After that, temperatures were above normal for much of the rest of the month.
Rainfall varied greatly across the state with pockets of above normal precipitation observed across northwest and south central Arkansas. Much of the rain across these areas and elsewhere fell between September 18-24. Some spots across northwest Arkansas picked up more than 5-6 inches of rain during that timeframe. Overall rainfall amounts across northern, central and eastern Arkansas were generally much less.
On the morning of September 22nd, heavy rain fell along the Arkansas River Valley between Fort Smith and Conway as slow moving thunderstorms moved across the area. Radar estimated rainfall totals from northern Logan County to southern Conway County were greater than 6 inches. Some flash flooding occurred across portions of Logan County.
Widespread severe weather was not seen across Arkansas in September, but occasional strong to severe storms throughout the month led to some isolated instances of wind damage and hail. On September 17th, a 66 mph wind gust was observed at the KXNA airport in northwest Arkansas. Hail as large as 1.5 inches fell in Washington County on September 23rd.
