Conditions across the state during October were largely dry with temperatures mostly above normal. A few days of cold temperatures were seen, but the heat and worsening drought would be the main story across Arkansas.
In the picture: No rain was in the forecast for several days and drought conditions were expected to worsen. |
Well above normal temperatures were in place at the start of the month along with dry conditions. This combination contributed to worsening wildfire danger and drought conditions across much of the state, except northeast Arkansas. A cold front moved through on the 6th which brought cooler temperatures but continued dry air along with it. It didn’t take long for above normal temperatures to return to the state and they persisted through the 13th when another (stronger) dry cold font moved south through the area. Much cooler temperatures were seen for several days behind the front.
A secondary push of cold air moved across the state on the 15th with temperatures falling across northern and eastern Arkansas through the afternoon hours. Strong NE winds were seen as well with gusts between 30-40 mph at times across the northeast half of the state. Winds were strong enough to cause some hazy sky conditions across eastern Arkansas where dirt was blown from farm fields. The secondary push of cold air provided comfortable daytime highs for several days along with cold morning low temperatures. Several locations experienced temperatures in the 30s for several mornings from October 15-19. Portions of northern and western Arkansas saw their first freeze of the season.
Hot and dry conditions prevailed for much of the rest of the month. A weak cold front moved south across the state from Oct 25-26. A few showers and storms occurred along and behind the front along with cooler temperatures for the 26th and 27th. Rain on the 26th brought an end to a long stretch of dry weather for several locations across the state with more widespread precipitation occurring on Halloween as a strong front moved across the state. Very early on Halloween as storms began moving into the state, a weak tornado occurred in Washington County. The rain that fell was beneficial and most of it exited the state before trick or treating began during the evening hours of the 31st.
