Storm Surge Flooding Continues in the Outer Banks; Dangerous Heat in the West

Storm surge flooding will continue through tonight in the Outer Banks in North Carolina as Hurricane Erin continues to move away from the U.S. Wind gusts up to tropical storm force are possible along the Mid-Atlantic and southern New England coasts through Friday. A Heat Advisory is in effect for most of Northern and Central Nevada from 11 AM PDT this morning until 8 PM PDT this evening. This type of heat will result in a moderate risk for heat-related illnesses. Although heat events like this are relatively common and happen many times a year, heat-related impacts are possible for those new to the area if simple precautions are not taken. Plan to take action to reduce time outdoors, drink plenty of water, and remain in air-conditioned buildings. Heat-sensitive groups, such as the elderly, young children, and those with chronic ailments may need assistance to avoid heat-related illnesses. As always, never, ever leave a child or pet in an enclosed automobile.
High temperatures throughout Northern and Central Nevada this afternoon will be six to eight degrees above normal for this time of year. Record heat is expected in Ely, Eureka, and Tonopah this afternoon. Near record heat is anticipated in Elko this afternoon. High temperatures across Northern and Central Nevada will remain well above seasonal values both this afternoon and Saturday afternoon. A cooling trend is expected Sunday through Thursday. By Thursday afternoon, maximum temperatures throughout Northern and Central Nevada will be six to eight degrees below normal for this time of year.
