Storm Impacting the Northwest U.S.; Fire Weather Conditions in Southern California; Severe Weather in the South

A Pacific storm is bringing areas of low elevation rain, moderate to heavy mountain snow, and high winds to the Northwest. Strong Santa Ana winds and very dry conditions are producing elevated to critical fire weather conditions in southern California. Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are possible through early Wednesday morning across parts of northeast Texas into western Tennessee. Read More >

Another powerful winter storm impacted the southern and eastern U.S. as low pressure moved from the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday February 12th and up the East Coast through early Friday morning February 14th.

On the backside of this system, heavy snowfall affected much of east Tennessee, western Virginia, West Virginia and southeast Kentucky.  Here locally, while the far northern and far western coal fields did not see a flake, locations near the Virginia border received large amounts of snow.  In fact several locations in Letcher, Pike and Harlan counties saw more than ten inches of snow.

The following map shows a summary of snowfall reports received by NWS Jackson, KY through around noon on Thursday February 13th, when most of the accumulating snow had ended.  A listing of some of the highest totals follows the map, including the time of the measurement (these totals may not be the final amount for each location).  A big thanks goes out to our dedicated coooperative weather observers, trained weather spotters and amatuer radio operators for their timely reports. Also, much appreciation for emergency personel and the general public for their reports as well.
