Heavy Precipitation in the West; Wintry Mix in the North; Fire Weather in the High Plains

Pacific moisture will continue to bring locally heavy coastal/lower elevation rain and heavy mountain snow to the West Coast and portions of the Intermountain West through Monday. A wintry mix will create hazardous travel across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest into early Monday. Fast Facts

A powerful cold front stretching from a weather system in the northern Great Lakes region, swept through eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois during the mid-afternoon into early evening on Wednesday, December 4. This front ushered in much colder air, with temperatures in the 40s early in the afternoon turning into wind chills in the single digits below zero by 8 P.M.

The cold air arrived on very strong winds, with some of the peak gusts:
- 66 mph at Cedar Rapids, IA (Eastern Iowa Airport in Linn County) just after 6 P.M. - highest gust observed at the airport since 69 mph on July 28, 2023
- 58 mph at Moline, IL at 8 P.M. (Quad Cities International Airport)
- 57 mph at Dubuque, IA near 3 P.M.
These winds were enough to cause very spotty damage. Four semi truck trailers were blown over in Dubuque County, IA; one on U.S. Highway 61 and three on U.S. Highway 151. No injuries were reported.

NWS Quad Cities and offices to the west, north, and east had issued Wind Advisories prior to the event.

To the north and northeast of our area, this storm system brought snow showers and snow squalls, which brought marked drops in visibility due to the snow and winds, and quick accumulations of snow.

December 4, 2024 Satellite Water Vapor Imagery: A robust upper level disturbance showed up clearly in the water vapor. Such a robust dry presence often correlates to a stratospheric intrusion, which means a deepening weather systems and more influences on weather down to the surface (in this case wind and strong cold air advection).

December 4, 2024 6 P.M. Surface Weather Map: A strong pressure gradient (packing of isobar lines) was present between a deep low pressure of ~991 mb and a modified arctic high pressure of 1038 mb. This helped drive the higher wind speeds, while the circulation around the low pressure oriented the wind direction from the north steering in much colder air.

December 4, 2024 5 P.M. Weather Balloon Data: This observed vertical profile plot shows temperature (red), dew point (green), and wind vectors (yellow). The very strong unidirectional wind field was a favorable setup for gusts to be maximized. The cold air moving in at a faster rate just off the surface steepened the low-level lapse rates aiding in vertical mixing and momentum transfer of strong winds down to the surface.
