Hurricane Ike - September 11-12, 2008

Even though our area was spared from the winds and rain associated with Hurricane Ike - located closer to the actual track of the storm as seen in the WPC rainfall graphic below - storm surge still had a major impact on the area. A storm tide (storm surge + tide) of 7.75 feet was observed at Fort Morgan in Baldwin County, AL with 5.43 feet at Bayou La Batre in Mobile County, AL. Major beach erosion occurred across all our coastal counties in Alabama (Mobile and Baldwin) and northwest Florida (Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa). Dauphin Island suffered major damage and the road to the island was closed during high tide for 2 days. Water covered the Causeway over Mobile Bay for 2 days and Highway 98 on Okaloosa Island was closed for 2 days for high water. The beaches were heavily damaged during Hurricane Gustav earlier in the month and did not have ample time to recover before Ike moved through the Gulf of Mexico.
