Tropical Storm Hermine - September 20-21, 1998

On the 15th of September (1998), a tropical depression formed in the Gulf of America, which would later be named Hermine. Due to an upper low meandering across the Gulf of America, development of Hermine was very slow and Hermine remained disorganized for several days. Hermine strengthened into a tropical storm on the morning of September 19.

Tropical Storm Hermine made landfall in Louisiana on September 20, 1997 and tracked northeastward across southern Mississippi and into western Alabama by the morning of the 21st. Hermine produced several inches of rain across our area as the system tracked into south central Alabama. The track of Hermine as well as the storm total rainfall across the region can be viewed in the graphic to the right (courtesy of NOAA WPC).
