December 27-28, 2018

Summary of all Local Storm Reports (LSRs) of heavy rain and flash flooding across generally southeast Mississippi and southwest Alabama on December 27 through December 28, as well as all the LSRs across the region for this event (regional map may take a minute to load).

Significant flash flooding unfolded across parts of southeast Mississippi (Perry, Greene, Wayne Counties) and southwest Alabama (Choctaw, Clarke Counties) where a swath of 10+ inches of rain fell in a short period of time. As seen in the rainfall table below, the highest rainfall totals occurred in the Clara community with one person measuring 15.5" and another measuring 13.75" of rainfall during the event.

Numerous roads were closed or washed out across the aforementioned area due to the flash flooding. In just Wayne County, MS, at least 15 roads washed out according to the county EMA. Floodwaters inundated numerous homes and business in Richton, Clara, Mulberry, and Sandhill communities in southeast Mississippi. Rapidly rising floodwaters also led to several water rescues. Further east across southwest Alabama, the Yantley, Gilbertown, Thomasville, and Fulton communities had numerous roads closed or washed out from the floodwaters.
