July 4-5, 2020 Storm Summaries

Overview

Mother Nature provided her own firework show this 4th of July for some, and unfortunately, severe weather as well. A few storms across southern North Dakota merged and intensified as they drifted southward from the early evening to past nightfall across/near the James River Valley. Significant damage resulted from straight-line wind gusts of 80+ mph, as well as an EF-2 tornado near Wetonka. Heavy rain, especially in Hand County, also led to flooding issues.

Additional rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms developed the following day, on July 5th, mainly across and west of the James River Valley. Wind gusts of 70+ mph were associated with a complex of storms across Jones, Lyman and Buffalo Counties during the early evening. Numerous storms then developed from northern Brown to Walworth Counties, beginning around 7pm. Several funnel clouds were spotted with this activity, particularly around the Long Lake and Bowdle/Hoven areas. Strong winds and some hail, as well as localized flooding, also accompanied this activity at times before it all diminished in intensity by around 10pm.

Summary: The Grassland Hutterite Colony sustained the most damage: a large machine shop lost a roof and wall, a large, empty, anchored grain bin was completely removed from its base and the adjacent feed mill was significantly damaged, a 400 ft x 80 ft turkey barn was completely destroyed, a trailer was flipped, and roof and siding damage occurred to many of the residential buildings. Debris was dispersed along the entire track of the tornado, to the southeast.

Summary: Residents were not home at the time of the storm, but it is likely multiple rounds of strong winds occurred. The strongest from the northwest, but also very strong southerly winds from the storm inflow. The most significant damage was done to a machine shop which lost a majority of the roof and walls. Farm machinery was damaged including a seed drill which was rotated and a feed wagon which was rolled on its side. An old barn was also toppled. This damage primarily spread from northwest to southeast. Finally, a small outbuilding was tossed back to the north, likely from strong southerly storm inflow winds.

Summary: Significant damage occurred to the Long Lake Hutterite Colony. Eye witnesses said two rounds of winds caused damage to the property. Southerly storm inflow winds ripped multiple roof panels off four separate turkey barns. Debris was spread to the west northwest. Additional damage was done to a feed mill and a machine shed was completely destroyed. Debris from these buildings was tossed from north northwest to south southeast. Other grain bin damage also occurred.
