Record Heat for the Intermountain West and Northern Plains; Heavy Rainfall and Severe Weather Threats

Record setting heat is expected over the next several days from the Intermountain West through the northern Plains. Furthermore, fire weather concerns increase with dry and breezy conditions. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorm threats for the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys, central Appalachians and Southeast today. Warm and mostly quiet weather will prevail today as highs take aim again at the low to middle 90s. Some scattered afternoon showers cannot be ruled out, mostly west of the I-49 corridor.
Temperatures will soar by late this weekend and especially next week as an upper-level ridge of high pressure builds across our region with upper 90s and even isolated triple-digit highs. This will likely warrant heat advisories and extreme heat warnings!
Conditions will become increasingly hot heading into the weekend. While Heat Advisory criteria may not necessarily be met, it is still essential to practice heat safety. Here are some helpful tips and strategies for heat safety.
