Storm Impacting the Northwest U.S.; Fire Weather Conditions in Southern California; Severe Weather in the South

A Pacific storm is bringing areas of low elevation rain, moderate to heavy mountain snow, and high winds to the Northwest. Strong Santa Ana winds and very dry conditions are producing elevated to critical fire weather conditions in southern California. Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are possible through early Wednesday morning across parts of northeast Texas into western Tennessee. Read More >

A High Surf Advisory is in effect from 6 AM Saturday through 4 PM Sunday for all Pacific Coast beaches. Long period westerly swell and large breaking waves will bring life-threatening conditions to the bays, ocean, and beaches this weekend and into next week. Never turn your back on the ocean!
A pattern change will bring multiple rounds of rain into the Bay Area and Central Coast beginning this weekend. Generally light rain is expected on Saturday and Sunday, with the rain concentrated in the North Bay. Significant rainfall is expected to spread across the region with an intense system Monday and Tuesday, with rain chances continuing into the days after Christmas.
A strong low pressure system will bring significant rainfall to the Bay Area and Central Coast Monday and Tuesday. The highest rain totals will lie in the North Bay with 1 to 3 inches in the valleys, locally up to 5 inches in the higher elevations. The coastal ranges see 1 to 2 inches of rain, with half an inch to an inch in the interior Bay Area and Monterey Bay region and a tenth to a half an inch in the interior Central Coast. Flooding of creeks, small streams, and roads is possible. Turn around, don't drown!
Strong winds return on Monday and Tuesday with an approaching low pressure system. There's a medium to high potential (40 to 70 percent) of gusts 35 miles per hour and above along the coast, through the gaps, passes, and valleys, and across higher terrain. Potential impacts include downed tree branches, unsecured objects being blown around, and difficulty driving high profile vehicles.
Model output is showing a possibility that a significant storm impacts the Bay Area and Central Coast in the days after Christmas. The main question is whether significant moisture will be drawn into the area, be diverted to the north or south, or fail to approach the coast. There's low confidence in the forecast at this time, so follow forecast updates!
