Summer Volunteer Opportunity - NWS Lincoln, IL

Description: Are you a student looking for insight into what a career in the National Weather Service (NWS) may involve? If so, this may be a great opportunity for you! The NWS office in Lincoln, IL is accepting applications for a student volunteer position for the summer of 2024. During this volunteer experience, you will learn many aspects of day-to-day operations, developing an understanding of the culture, responsibilities, and services of a weather forecast office. In addition, you will have the opportunity to participate in a small research project, and office outreach. This will give you the opportunity to determine whether you'd like to pursue a career with the National Weather Service.

Frequency: Averages two days per week (~10-20 hours) with availability of the program starting around the end of May and ending around the middle of August. The aim is for students to spend at least 160 hours in the program.

Eligibility: Students must be pursuing a degree in meteorology or atmospheric science meeting the USAJOBS series 1340 requirements, or a degree in hydrology that meets the series 1315 requirements. Students must be undergraduates entering their junior or senior year, graduate students, or a recent graduate (past 12 months). All volunteers are subject to a mandatory security background check. This position is unpaid.

What we need from you: Applicants must submit 1) a resume, 2) a single-page cover letter expressing interests, motivation, skills, and preferred start/end dates, 3) unofficial transcripts, and 4) at least one letter of reference from a faculty member at their university.

How you will be chosen: Applicants will be selected based on a combination of their coursework, reference(s), resume, and cover letter. Interviews may be utilized as well.
