Snow in the Rockies; Showers and Thunderstorms Along the Gulf Coast; Potential Winter Storm for Northern Mid-Atlantic and Interior New England

A winter-like pattern will continue over much of the Lower 48 over the next few days, with snow stretching from the Rockies today into the Middle Mississippi Valley on Monday. Showers and thunderstorms will develop along the Gulf Coast and Southeast on Monday. From 6:00 p.m. CST Friday, December 6th until 6:00 p.m. CST Saturday, December 7th, HAM radio volunteers and NWS SKYWARN Spotters will be taking part in the annual SKYWARN Recognition Day.

 

 

What is SKYWARN Recognition Day (SRD)? 

 

SRD was developed in 1999 by the NWS and the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). It recognizes the contributions that volunteer SKYWARN radio operators make to the NWS. During SRD, SKYWARN operators visit NWS offices and contact other radio operators across the United States and the world.

 

How many NWS Stations are participating in the SRD event?

What hours will WX9ILX be operating?

SRD Operations will begin at 6:00 p.m. CST Friday December 6th until roughly Midnight. We will resume monitoring Saturday December 7th around 8:00 a.m. CST. The event will end at 6:00 p.m. CST Saturday.

 

What HAM Radio frequencies and modes will be used during SRD?

The NWS Lincoln office (HAM call sign: WX9ILX) will be using the following bands:

  • 80 Meters
  • 40 Meters
  • 20 Meters
  • 15 Meters
  • 10 Meters
  •   2 Meters
  • 440 Mhz
     

The modes we plan to operate include:

  • SSB
  • FM
  • CW
  • FT8
