April 2022 Precipitation Highlights:

  • April saw below normal precipitation across almost all of central and southeastern IL. One exception was in the far southeastern corner of our area, where a narrow band of thunderstorms produced more than 2" of rain on April 24th-25th. Most areas saw precipitation departures of 1 to 2 inches lower than normal, and some areas near I-70 were more than two inches lower than normal. While precipitation totals were below normal, precipitation still occurred rather frequently. Our climate sites in Peoria and Lincoln both recorded at least 0.01" of precipitation on 16 of the 30 days in April. 
  • No substantial snow events occurred during the month of April. Locations along and north of I-74 received a few tenths of snowfall during the early morning hours on April 9th. Normal snowfall values for most locations during April are a half inch or less.

April 2022 Temperature Highlights:

  • Temperatures across central Illinois ranged from 2 to 4 degrees below normal during the month of April. Near or below average temperatures were common across the area throughout the month, with the only notable warmup coming on April 22-23. On those days, high temperatures climbed into the 80s, which was 10-20 degrees above normal. April is usually when the last freeze of the year occurs, with areas south of I-74 typically seeing their last freeze between April 11-20, and areas north of I-74 seeing their last freeze between April 21-30. Most of the area experienced freezing temperatures on April 19, while Peoria and Bloomington both had freezing temperatures on April 26.

April 2022 Temperature Records:

  • A daily record warm low temperature of 64 was set at Peoria on April 23.
  • A daily record warm low temperature of 65 was tied at Springfield on April 23. 
  • No monthly temperature records were set during April 2022.

May 2022 Look Ahead:

  • The official May 2022 outlooks from NOAA's Climate Predication center show equal chances of above or below normal temperatures across most of Illinois. The exception is northern Illinois, where below normal temperatures are favored. There are also equal chances of above or below normal precipitation across most of Illinois, although above normal precipitation is favored in areas west of the Illinois River.
