Storm Impacting the Northwest U.S.; Fire Weather Conditions in Southern California; Severe Weather in the South

A Pacific storm is bringing areas of low elevation rain, moderate to heavy mountain snow, and high winds to the Northwest. Strong Santa Ana winds and very dry conditions are producing elevated to critical fire weather conditions in southern California. ...Isolated Severe Hail and Heavy Rainfall of October 8th, 2014...

 Loop above on left shows radar images from 3 pm through 7:30 pm from the Hytop Radar located in Jackson County, AL (Notice Repeated storms that impact NW Cullman and SW Morgan Counties.

 Map above on right shows rainfall totals from 7 am on October 8th through 7 am on October 9th, 2014.  Notice 2-4 inch totals over NW Cullman and SW Morgan Counties.


Training of strong to severe thunderstorms produced very heavy rainfall south of the Tennessee River on October 8th, 2014. Some observed rainfall totals from October 8th at 7 am through October 9th at 7 am are shown below.  Some higher rainfall totals were estimated by radar southwest of Hartselle in Morgan county (AL) and northwest of Cullman in Cullman County (AL) near the Morgan County/Cullman county line.  Some rainfall was likely between 2 and 4 inches in these areas.

Due to some cooler air aloft and strong daytime heating, some severe thunderstorms developed and produced small to large hail.  Most of the reported hail was nickel to quarter size.  One particularly severe storm produced a swath of baseball size hail  from Cutoff road at Hwy 36 to the Hwy 36 and Hwy 67 intersection just  south of Somerville.
